Hi everyone, Zack (@zackowicz) here again. Were now just two days away from the reopening of the Washington Monument! Today I am going to give you some interesting #MonumentFacts along with some more of my favorite shots. - 1. In 1833, a private organization formed called the Washington National Monument Society, dedicated to funding and building a monument to the nation's first president. The first example of private support on the National Mall, the Society funded the first 156 feet of the monument before going bankrupt. In 1876, Congress voted to fund the completion of the monument. - 2. In 1845 the Society selected a design for the monument by Robert Mills. This original design called for a 600-foot tall obelisk with a nearly flat top, surrounded by a colonnaded rotunda 200-feet in diameter and 100-feet tall. Thirty 12-foot diameter columns formed a 'National Pantheon' with statues of 30 prominent Revolutionary War heroes and signers of the Declaration of Independence inside. The obelisk was crowned with a statue of Washington in a chariot. This building was estimated to cost $200,000 to complete. The design was then authorized by Congress on January 1st, 1848. - 3. By April 1848, due to funding shortfalls, the Washington National Monument Society directed Mills to modify his original design for the monument. On July 4, 1848 the cornerstone was laid. - 4. The Washington Monument opened to the public for the first time on October 9, 1888. #WashingtonMonument #NationalMall

Hi everyone, Zack (@zackowicz) here! I am excited to be taking over this account for the next few days. I will be posting several of my favorite shots showcasing the Washington Monument in celebration of its reopening on Thursday, September 19th. The monument is the singular object that defines the DC skyline. You can see it from almost anywhere in the city and even across the borders from Virginia and Maryland. It looks gorgeous in the morning light, on a cloudless day, a vibrant sunset, or a stormy night. This is a tribute to all that makes it great. #WashingtonMonument #NationalMall

It needs to be here in 100 years and it needs to be in the best shape that it can be.” - Teresa Durkin, Executive VP of the Trust for the National Mall • • Recently named one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places by @savingplaces, the #NationalMall Tidal Basin is in dire need of help.
