Grip-and-Rip 🦍 versus Pulling the Slack 🧐 —— —— This is a major #throwback to one of my best pulls ever with 605ish lbs (humble flex lol), in the middle of Ramadan after 16 hours of fasting 😵. These were taken about 5 minutes apart. The difference between both clips is relatively minuscule. In both, I drop my hips rapidly. On the left, the momentum causes lost control and an uncertain bar path. On the right, I manage to pull the slack (essentially, tug the bar with a vertical force vector so as to minimize space between body and the bar) as my hips descend and sink my hips just low enough to manage a much smoother bar path. Hence, the elimination of the booty shakes from one attempt to the other. —— Being weaker off the floor, I’d often tend to try and yank the bar to begin the ascent with the most speed possible. But, as @bartellbarbell described in his article at @barbend, breaking the floor can make or break a lockout. Lack of thoracic stability results in shortening the moment arm (distance between acting muscle and force) (technically a good thing) at the expense of bar path stability; lack of tightness means potential for bar drift and you’ll often have to roll your shoulders to fully erect your back at lockout. —— If yanking a barbell like a madman works for you, you do you. There are a lot of competitive powerlifters and athletes who pay no mind to slack, and have great success. That being said, if you’re just deadlifting in the gym for general strength or health, it’s probably worth protecting yourself and playing it safe, while maximizing efficacy of the hypertrophy benefits of the deadlift.
