Recovery goes far beyond taking off days.
A day off from training for someone who truly wants to be GREAT involves a little more than a day off.
1. Are you getting 8 hours or more of sleep?
2. Are you staying on track with your nutrition?
3. How is your alcohol consumption between workouts?
There are some amazing athletes out there who stink at recovering.
Outside of maybe Brett Favre. How many NFL players do we see who have crazy night life's and have long prosperous careers in the NFL? Why do you think Tom Brady is having as much success in his 40s as he is?
Those that train hard need to be recovering just as hard. Those that ignore this reality are holding themselves back from being their best.
And I know some younger/contrarians out there will question this.
"But why does X elite athlete sleep for 4 hours a night and eat like crap and still win scoring titles?"
Well, elite athletes are elite for reasons that go far beyond their work ethics. There are a lot of hard working people in this world. But only a few contain the natural talent of a say... Lebron James. But in order for Lebron James to be the best in the NBA for the last 15 years, he needs to work at it. But his entry into the NBA more than likely did not have to be as hard fought as some others.
So when I see someone young and full of potential, I always quiver when I see them squander it by drinking too much alcohol, not getting enough sleep, and shafting their diet. Not that they need to desire to be the best. But when someone claims to have passion, yet they seem to half ass the out of gym/court/field recovery, they are limiting their long term potential.
