What a discovery “Lotte Laserstein” (Born 1898 in Poland, grew up in Berlin and grew old in Sweden 1993), beautiful exhibition of her many portraits @staedelmuseum in Frankfurt. One of the big rediscovered artists of the last years. An exhibition worth the trip to Frankfurt 😀#lottelaserstein #lottelasersteinexhibition #deutsche #modernekunst #realism #impressionistic #brushstroke #portrait #portraitpainting #modernart #exhibition #städelmuseum #staedelmuseum #rediscovered #suprise

This weeks art interpretation blog entry will be about Lotte Lasersteins Russian Girl with Puder Compact (1928) seen at the Staedels exhibition. I thought of some questions for you - please see at the end. Laserstein was one of the most important artists that were part of the New Objectivity during the first half of 20th Century. The aim was a desillusionment, showing daily life clear and objectively. And I feel that the Russian girl portrait really fits into this. It shows an everyday situation, girl applying her make up, very clear and somehow emotionless. On the other hand the picture captures a very modern, fashionable (for this time trendy haircut) and concentrated moment of an partly representative and partly caring gesture. Also very interesting are the contrasts in this painting: intense red but soft textile, serious facial features but vivid skin. What about the 2 mirrors in the picture? Showing to different sides of her and then again she herself sees another side of her face that we don’t see. For me this artwork is a wonderful representation of the conflict between self vs external image. Powder hides flaws while it highlights the beauty. Now it’s your turn, what do you see in the picture? How would you describe her emotions? What is she thinking? Where is she going? And do you think she is beautiful? What is the picture about? #lottelaserstein #lottelasersteinexhibition #russischesmädchenmitpuderdose #artinterpretation #kunstinterpretation #artsy #städel #städelmuseum #staedel #staedelmuseum
