"The shot of above is of me free swimming with a giant 11 ft. female Mako shark in stunning New Zealand waters during a recent trip for an upcoming show with @rondarousey. 🦈 . . . “There are no jokes when you enter the domain of an animal like this, with capabilities of size (11ft), weight (800lbs), teeth (triangulated for cutting), vision (binocular) and speed (50mph bursts), and of most importance with Mako sharks, ATTITUDE. In my opinion the Mako is the most intense shark species to freedive with. Not only do they hunt prey much bigger than you are (swordfish, marlin, tuna), but they also eliminate competitors via direct action, and competition is based primarily on size!🦈 . . . The good news is that when you spend enough time on the boat, learning about their behavior, then apply this underwater with small sharks, and slowly work your way up in size, you gain experience, and that is key with sharks. But at the end of the day, this is a highly capable predator. Luckily this mature female was a dream to swim with and likely one of my best ever encounters.” 📸by @amberandfriends_photography & 🦈caption by Riley Elliott (@thelifeofrileynz) . . . .
