Why the hell is that!?⠀ .⠀ .⠀ I don’t need to tell you how beautiful, intricate, complex, and amazing women’s bodies are. You already know that (whether you’ll admit it or not). I also don’t need to tell you how I N S A N E it is that menstruation is used as a manipulation tool in any circumstance. And I promise, for now, to not give you a lesson on the fascinating intricacies of the menstrual cycle.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ What I do need to tell you is this: If you’re not harnessing the infinite power, femininity, creativity, and wisdom that your menstrual cycle (your true menstrual cycle, none of that pill-bleed crap) gives you access to, you’re missing out. Big time. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Your cycle is not a hindrance or an obstacle. If you feel that way due to any symptoms you’re experiencing, let’s clear the air. Do you ever have a gut feeling…and then completely ignore it?⠀ .⠀ .⠀ That is exactly what I did when I walked into the gym for the first time after my PCOS diagnosis. My gut said “do some strength training” and my brain said “get the fuck outta here.”⠀ .⠀ .⠀ My brain triumphed that day. I didn’t do any strength training. I got on a treadmill and walked for 3 miles and then left. Then I joined a spin class (ew). Then I got discouraged and stopped working out. Then I bought a bicycle, and almost never rode it. Then I did yoga sporadically. Then I occasionally walked, on a different treadmill, at my apartment complex gym. Then I joined a women’s boxing/circuit training gym and nearly killed myself with overexertion. ⠀ Sound like you? Jumping from thing to thing, trying to find what works, what makes you feel GOOD, what you actually want to stick to all while watching the scale steadily rise?⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Yeah, have I mentioned PCOS sucks? Here is the thing, your body is S T R E S S E D, friend. That means that overexerting yourself, doubling up on your exercise efforts, doing crazy bootcamps and limiting yourself to 500 calories per day is NOT going to work. It’s going to stress your body out even more, your hormones will be further imbalanced, you’ll watch the scale continue to rise, AND you’ll be hungry. That sounds terrible, right?⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Strength training (weight training in particular) has been my GAME CHANGER. Here’s why:⠀ -Strength Training Reduces Insulin Resistance⠀ -It makes you feel freaking empowered⠀ -Muscles fight fat (especially in the abdomen!)⠀ -When you develop movement goals, making healthier choices is a given⠀ -Strength Training is correlated to lower LDLs (bad cholesterol)⠀ -Weight Training reduces inflammation ⠀ -Gain trust in your body- it can do strong things!⠀ -Muscle is metabolically active (muscle burns calories in order to sustain itself!)⠀ -Learn about your body- how you move is different from how others move!⠀ -Strength Training can lead to reduced free testosterone levels⠀ .⠀ .⠀ What kind of movement are you doing?
