[TRUTH ABOUT RIB SUBLUXATIONS] 🇨🇦 Collaborative post with @themvmtpts . 💡 PSA: Barring any traumatic injuries, ribs do not go out of place and manual therapy cannot put it back in it's place. . 😤 It's insane to hear people make claims of diagnosing rib subluxations without imaging using their palpation and the use of manual therapy to pop it back into place. . ✔ There are studies that shown imaging of people after traumatic accidents in the thoracic region showing things like pneumothorax, hemothorax, rib fractures, sternal fractures and SC dislocations. The prevalence of rib subluxation…none. You can literally have a fractured rib but the joint capsule will still be intact. . ✔ This is not to say that these rib 'mobilizations' techniques do not have any use! When we think about the underlying mechanism of why someone has unilateral thoracic pain, we have to consider it could be protective muscle tone stemming from local musculature. This increase in tone could potentially be the cause of the 'bump' that is being palpated and manual therapy/touch does a great job of decreasing tone. . 🤔 So, why does this matter if the techniques still work to decrease symptoms? It's creates a fragile mindset, a false narrative, it creates dependency and it de-values our profession from a scientific standpoint. I am writing this because a student was told their ribs subluxed while having bad posture performing a back squat. That…is why. . 📚 'Ribs Don’t Sublux, Ribs Don’t “Go Out”… So What’s Going On?'
