Pashupati is a religious site where Hindu devotees have their dead cremated on a pyre in front of the holy river Bagmati. I'm not one to take photos of the dead being burnt as I find it distasteful. However, I took this photo because of the man standing in front of the fire. He works there and his responsibility is to ensure that the corpse burns thoroughly (I guess; he was constantly stoking the fire and adding wood to it to keep it blazing). I wonder if he's desensitized to it all - the smell, the sight of distressed relatives of the deceased, and the ashes that remain after everything has burnt away.
