When I cook I make sure to think twice about food scraps and find different ways to use them before throwing them in my Green Bin. Today I’m cooking with scraps and making myself soup using broccoli and asparagus stalks, some herb oil, stems of thyme and rosemary, and a strawberry pesto using the strawberry tops. I was shocked to find out that food waste costs an average Canadian household $1,100 per year. We have to take small steps to reduce food waste like storing food properly so it stays fresh longer, using up what we purchase and planing out our meals so we just buy what we need.
