"The Perpetuation Of Species" - 🔵Maestro's Notes: "I wish... No. Wishing is wrong. It's the wrong word right now. That's not what I mean. What I mean is . . . I believe in God. I know a lot of you dont, but I still want to offer a prayer for our survival. Mine included. Because I believe that God, whomever you hold that to be, hears all prayers, even if sometimes the answer is no. So may the Lord bless you, May the Lord keep you, May the Lord lift up his divine countenance upon you and give you peace." - Morgan Freeman from the motion picture, Deep Impact. A prayer for survival not just for man, but for our very endangered wildlife. On average, only 1 in a thousand seaturtle hatchlings will grow up to maturity. Such is the very important task of all female Seaturtles, making multiple trips up and down the beach to lay her clutch of eggs making sure the sheer number of hatchlings grow up to make the trip up this beach some day. This beautiful footage was filmed at sunrise on location in Watamu, Kenya courtesy of The Local Ocean Trust @localoceantrust - A very tired green turtle returning to the ocean as the sun rises over Watamu after laying her third nest so far this season. Our Nest Monitoring and Protection Programme has seen a total of 40 nests so far this year and is kindly sponsored by @tusk_org . This is always such a magical sight and we hope this female will be back to lay a couple more nests before the season is over. The Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas), also known as the Green Turtle, Black (sea) Turtle or Pacific Green Turtle, is a large sea turtle of the family Cheloniidae. It is the only species in the genus Chelonia. Its range extends throughout tropical and subtropical seas around the world, with two distinct populations in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, but it is also found in the Indian Ocean. The common name comes from the usually green fat found beneath its carapace; these turtles' shells are olive to black. #Conservation #Education #Research #OceanOptimism🌊 #LoveYourLocalOcean #GreenSeaturtle #VisitWatamu #NoFilter #Sunrise #Beach #BeachLife #Endangered #SaveOurOceans #WondersOfWatamu #IndianOcean #Nesting #MarineConservation

Magical layers of sea ice near whichaway luxury camp, photographed by @markoprezelj . Antarctica holds enough frozen water to raise world oceans by 58 meters. The sea ice is melting faster in the last five years, 219 billion metric tons per year, according to a major scientific study combining ice core and satellite image analysis published recently in nature magazine. Periclimenes parasite popping out "pretty in pink" * One of my favorite reasons to travel with "Our Beloved Seas" (Richard Smith - @oceanrealmimages and the incredible Wendy Brown) is that each trip is not only fantastically planned but offers more and more and more critter information! Information about the critters we see, their behaviors, ways to interact responsibly, plus so much more... And, these truly spectacular trips continue to impact others. On a prior trip, Dr. Richard Smith (PhD in Marine Biology) discussed parasites. For many, this might be a terrible stomach turning topic. For me, I found it both strange and engrossing (bad pun intended ;-). * So what's interesting is that I never understood how the bumps on shrimps (which are parasites) could be so perfectly colored to the shrimp on which they're hosted. I know there are lots of parasites but it just seemed too perfect. But, now I know why - they're not external. They're actually under shell (probably the carapace but I don't know detailed shrimp anatomy and even if Rich told me, I've forgotten ;-). Anyway, as the parasite grows and as the shrimp molts, the parasite continues to push out the carapace... This is why the parasite looks like the shrimp - we can't actually see it (unless it's a transparent shell; I have some pictures of that too but I'll save that for another day). Apparently these parasites live quite some time in the shrimp, even laying their eggs in the shrimp's body cavity. * OK, that's probably enough for now... I'm sure that's enough for most imaginations. Pretty wild for sure! * Emperor Shrimp (Periclimenes imperator) on a snake sea cucumber (Synapta maculata) Date taken: July 17, 2018 at 11:38am Dive site: Aer Bajo Dua, Lembeh Strait Diving with "Critters at Lembeh" at the wonderful "Lembeh Resort" * Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periclimenes_imperator https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synaptidae https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commensalism

Did you know that Donsol attracts the Philippines largest #whalesharks ? Check out a new #scientificstudy by the World WideFund for Nature (WWF) Philippines (@wwfphilippines ) and Large Marine Vertebrate Research Institute Philippines (LAMAVE) which revealed that whale sharks in Donsol, #philippines are uncharacteristically larger than those found elsewhere in the Philippines. https://www.lamave.org/news/publication-donsol-whale-sharks 📷@stevedeneef #ocean #environment #conservation #marineconservation #sharks #research #lamave

How is this still a thing in 2018? We should all know the negative impact of removing an apex predator from an ecosystem by now. Would you feel differently if it was a tiger or a wolf hanging there dead? Sharks are essential for maintaining the balance of life in our oceans. It has been proven that reefs with protected shark populations thrive - reefs where they are not protected are dying. 70% of the worlds oxygen comes from the sea... if sharks die and the balance tips and marine plant life dies, we die too. We "developed" western nations need to set a better example. We can't preach about the negative impact of shark fin soup while we indulge in these types of "competitions" killing majestic animals for "sport."
