Sometimes the stories people confide to me during field work are too dark to share, especially on a light-filled place like Instagram. When I return home, friends often ask me, “how do you cope when exploring such difficult issues?” The truth is that it takes a lot of self care. Daily meditation, journalling and sitting with uncomfortable feelings. But I’m the fortunate one - I go home and process these things in my own time and space. The community workers I meet out here do this day in and day out. It’s their whole world - and their community - who are suffering.
As I sit in the airport I’m thinking about the people who are on the frontline of this work here in PNG, pushing progress in their own ways. I asked Jennifer, a health worker, how she finds the energy to continue to show up. “I’m feeling old!” she laughed. “But I see a smile when somebody realises for the first time they have life choices as a result of my help, and it makes it all worth it.”
So many weddings this year, I can't wait to capture them all around the world. 😍
