Some perspectives on a violin by Alessandro Gagliano c.1725 in Naples. He’s the first of the Gagliano makers.
With the UV shots, a lot of the varnish wear has been tinted blue by the shellac on top, but it’s enough to see what’s going on. Should note that the head isn’t original!
There’s a lot of noticeable asymmetry and yet many of the other making-aspects are great.
When examining the inside I noted that the blocks were spruce and the original linings were of a slightly different wood; the linings looked quite narrow to the eye, around 5 or 6mm high and this is a feature i also saw with the previous one I handled.
The f holes are probably the most recognisable feature of his work. They’re set lower than conventional Fs and swing out quite markedly.
And yes I could have turned off the lights to take the UV shots but instead I got under a table lol.
