Our shop began as a single kiosk of one artisan on 6 December 2016 in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Daily demonstrations of spinning yarn and crochet continued through the winter and into 2017. Our offerings and customer service grew organically as the people of Fort Knox warmly embraced us. We made bonds with individuals—active duty, National Guard, Reservists, HRC workers, ROTC, retirees, and civilians— through face to face real dialogue on a day to day basis. In April 2017 we moved into a small storefront area and began offering work from four other artists. In a span of about six months we grew to a community network of between 40 and 50 artisans. Some artists contribute a handful of wares; others are able to produce in slightly larger volumes. We are a supportive culture of all types of artists and encourage their efforts at all levels of production because we understand the varying nature of their lives; some are retired while others balance time between their small business and another full time job. Our people are experts/masters in their fields as well emerging artists. Many of our emerging artists simply need an outlet because their lifestyle is not accommodating to starting up an independent business. Others have joined because they are looking to expand. Many are veterans and appreciate the opportunity to give back and support. Together, we are a network of networks.
The artists in our shop come to us in a variety of ways. We are growing naturally. Some are prior connections, networks we already had from being in the community. Others have been referred to us, or began as customers who, in conversation, expressed that they are artists too. From those sorts of connections, the greater network has grown. Handcrafted work attracts other artisans as well as folks who appreciate and choose to be involved as consumers.
Our shop focuses on the premise that walking away with a positive experience is paramount. Our on-site demonstrations, taste samplings, book signings, social gatherings, and info circles have allowed us to make incredibly strong connections. ..
