A rough first draft to practice a piece that will contain a self-portrait that I’m going to do on grey paper in charcoal. I just used a regular hb pencil on this one to keep it simple, I wanted to do this faster than usual so I didn’t use any construction techniques. The lack of basic construction underneath definitely shows through in this but doing a first pass helps me get a feel for the value and gives me an opportunity to confront problems that arise within the piece without fear of messing up the final product by over-erasing or over-working the page. I’ll probably label the values on this drawing with sticky notes or highlighter and construct studies of each section of the face separately on a new piece of paper before starting on the actual project so it has much better defined features. My piece 'Nest' for the 12x12 group show!
The show opens *tomorrow night Dec 12th from 6-9pm* and runs until Dec 23rd at the @thestockroomgallery 's new space at 355A Wellington St, Clifton Hill ❤️ The first 12x12 show they held 3 years ago was my introduction to the Stockroom and to Melika and Jess. I'm so glad I walked into their store that day because they've been an incredible support to me and my work ever since. I'm so grateful to be involved, among another line up of over 200 incredible local and international artists. Get down if you can! ✨ #jesssoutheyart
