Hermann Hesse’s novel „Narziss und Goldmund“ is one of the few books which I have read more than three times. It takes place in the medieval times and is about two friends who have completely opposite personalities. Narziss lives in a monastery and lives a very ascetic life with strict diets and prayers, studying ancient Greek, Latin and philosophy day by day. Goldmund on the other hand travels the world as a wayfarer, having many affairs and being confronted with death. One day he meets a sculptor and apprentices to him to become an artist himself. Reading “Narziss and Goldmund” encouraged me to leave my practice room from time to time, go out, meet friends, attend concerts, visit museums, go for adventures and extracurricular activities. I believe that growing as a person is a very important part of growing as an artist. We should go out and make mistakes, fall and get up again. This book made me realize that there is no such thing as a “mistake”, but that everything has a meaning in the bigger frame and falls into place in the end. What is your favorite book?
