Caravaggio „Bacchus”,c. 1598, Oli on canvas, 95 cm x 85 cm, Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence. This masterpiece of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was unknown until 1913, when it was found in warehouses of Uffizi. Roberto Longhi attributed without doubt „Bacco” to Caravaggio and this painting is currently one of the pearls of Uffizi. The canvas comes from the youthful period of Caravaggio's work, his first stay in Rome and work for his patron, Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte. The work created at the request of the cardinal was given to the Grand Duke of Florence, Ferdinando de’ Medici. Bacchus has a white toga slung over his left shoulder. He is half-naked. His torso shines with vitality in the background of still life. Rotten fruits contrast with smooth skin, tense muscles and the musculature of the young Bacchus. On the body of the god you can see a delicate shading that highlights the details of his figure, making him more sensual. Bacchus is holding a black ribbon in his right hand. His body is slightly twisted. His right arm rests on a bed set for a feast in accordance with the Roman custom at the richly set table.
