The lineage of film music, however, is compressed into a period of less than a century, beginning with the early experiments of Meisel and Prokofiev in Russia, making its first big mark internationally when émigré composers like Erich Korngold and Max Steiner came to Hollywood from Vienna; evolving under the pressures of the Hollywood Studio system into a “Golden Age” personified by the likes of Alfred Newman, Miklós Rózsa, and Franz Waxman, and making a marked turn into idiosyncratic expression in the work of Bernard Herrmann. Along the way, composers such as Leonard Rosenman made notable attempts to utilize serial technique, while others, e.g., Elmer Bernstein, incorporated American idioms like jazz. In Italy, Ennio Morricone shaped youthful experiments with ‘anti-musical systems’ into iconic scores. During the period 1958-68, all these influences fused into what we now recognize as film music. Through intensive viewing, discussion, score analysis, and imitative exercise, learners will be guided through the processes by which the conventions, clichés, tropes, and gestures of film music became a language recognizable to a broad, international audience. The first practitioners of film scoring art were composers largely schooled in the Viennese, German and Russian traditions, and their work reflects this and derives musical vitality from it. Likewise, no film and media composer who hopes to make an impression today can do so without a working knowledge of 20th and 21st century harmonic theory and exposure to the architects of modernism, minimalism, post-minimalism, and specialized forms such as Arvo Pärt’s tintinnabuli, Penderecki’s novel use of the instruments of the orchestra, aleatoric forms, and the notational innovations of Xenakis and others. The operative pedagogy is that if a composer can comprehend the arc of a long-form narrative and craft a musical analog of that arc, he or she can more readily apply this knowledge to other variants, such as episodic television, animated shorts, video games, and virtual reality experiences. In short, it all begins with a story, and the function of music for the screen is to support it, whether in an overt, operatic style (John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Howard Shore) or in a sub-textual way that links itself to the emotional and psychological values at play in the story (Thomas Newman, Clint Mansell, Mica Levi). Learners will explore the key elements of pacing, blocking, and mise-en-scéne that inform crucial decisions about tempo, meter and modality, become familiar with the tools of spotting notes, timing notes, and bar breakdowns, and learn how to “read a scene” as a dramatist reads it. Condensed units on genre and type, e.g. the science-fiction-fantasy score, film noir, romantic comedy, and both historical and intimate human drama will outfit composers with the basic toolkit of techniques. RELEVANT and INDUSTRY-TAILORED modules! 🔥🔥 MODULE 4 -- TECHNIQUES OF SCORING FOR THE SCREEN II: CRAFTING A PERSONAL STYLE (3 Credits) With general principles in hand, and a knowledge of how musical dramaturgy has been practiced in the past (and in the present), how does the composer insure that his or her music does not sound like “everyone else’s?” How does the composer apply what’s been learned to the creation of a musical fingerprint that is as distinctive as that of an Elfman, a Portman, or a Zimmer? Some students will see this musical persona emerge relatively quickly; others will have to dig for it. But the elements of character, affinity, passion, or eccentricity that make for a musical personality will be present in almost all students, whether explicitly or implicitly. The exercises and writing assignments given during this Composition module will all be calibrated to the “bringing out” the composer’s compositional identity, while at the same time progressing to a more sophisticated understanding of both tonal and post-tonal harmony and thematic development in preparation for their major project. Learners will explore methodologies for creating distinctive and memorable music with limited resources and smaller ensembles, for although some major movie projects involves a large symphonic ensemble, the “real world” is likely to offer more modest forces, at least initially. Treated as such, it requires a broad range of knowledge and skills. The knowledge of the characteristics of each standard orchestral instrument is part of the instrumentation section of the module. The focus will be divided into the four orchestral families of strings, brass, woodwind and percussion instruments (including concert harp.) That knowledge, comprising of range, timbral palette and individual technical features of each instrument, is intertwined with the art of orchestration, which encompasses instrumentation and instrumental combination spread across an orchestral score, taking into account the timbral results of each creative decision made in the process. Students will start from the outset writing their own compositions, as well as utilizing existing material (such as a piano score), and apply their orchestration skills to create large-scale orchestral scores from their initial sketch. A successful orchestration requires that the timbral qualities of an underscore be applied correctly, as to not interfere with dialogue and other sound elements.
