Who here has heard about the Bramble shark (Echinorhinus brucus)? This SCIENCE SUNDAY we were lucky to hear a presentation on the little known Bramble shark, presented by our wonderful intern Angela. The Bramble and prickly (Echinorhinus cookei) sharks are the only 2 species in the family Echinorhinidae, which until recently was always thought to be part of the Squaliforme, or dogfish, order. However, more recent molecular studies have argued that Echinorhinidae deserve an order of their own which would make 9 orders of sharks in total. As the name suggests Bramble sharks bodies are covered in sporadically placed thorn-like dermal denticles and possibly due to their thin skin their bodies are also covered in a thick layer of smelly mucus (🤢). Although the Bramble shark has a relatively wide distribution ranging from 18m (but must be cold) down to 900m, they are very rare to see and thus remain data deficient. If you know any more cool facts about the Bramble or prickly shark why not share them with us in a comment below 🤓 ... ... ... ... ... ... #sundayscience #education #exploration #sharks #saveoursharks #sharklife #sharklifeconservation #brambleshark #funfacts #factshare #marineinternships #oceanscience #sharksforkids #discoversharks #sharksofinstagram #sodwanabay #southafrica
