Don't you just love the  openness of the figures? I for one most certainly do. There's a sketch-like freshness to Silvestri's characters. . What's missing is #hatching and #crosshatching of any kind. That allows the colors to really shine, but is so far away, simultanously, from what we established as the #ImageStyle. One last a propos Glynis Wein/Oliver, this time concerning this fragment of an original #ColorGuide I bought a few months ago: production art for #XMen Annual 99, painted by #JoeRosas over line work by #RickLeonardi. . Rosas worked under peculiar, most interesting circumstances, coloring the art by hand but aiming for the sheen of early 2000 computer effects -- of which I'm unsure at what point during the production process they would be added. . To be honest, I really bought that page because it so reminds me of Wein/Oliver's work. I've been spending some time with the #UltimateXMen books by #MarkMillar and the brothers Kubert lately, when I came across this panel and immediately thought: Now that is #ImageStyle comics. . Look at Jean's bathrobe: That could be a piece of #Spawn art, I thought, and checked if it was still #ArtThibert inking, like the previous issues. I discovered that it's actually #DannyMiki, who did that panel. . Miki is known for his collaborations with John Romita Jr. and Joe Quesada as well as Spawn artists #GregCapullo and #TonyDaniel. #ColorBlocking continues to be a major trend in graphic design. It's a technique of arranging pure colors with a painterly sensibility by putting them right against each other. . In this sense, color blocking has been really big since the early 1990s, at least, when colorist #GlynnisWein did some wonderful work on the #XMen line of comics. . Wein thus co-created the conditions, under which the X-Men artists of the time developed their #ImageStyle. Digital painting over a clean and striking composition: #MichaelTurner and #PeterSteigerwald did it again on this "Identity Crisis" cover. . Painterly are not only the ragged edges that differentiate the picture from negative space. When you look closely through the window in the back, the cityscape depicted sure seems fully painted. . Now these are two interesting artistic collaborators when it comes to painted #ImageStyle comics: Fan favorite #MichaelTurner on pencils with the highly underpraised #PeterSteigerwald playing the colors. . That piece -- a #Soulfire #variantcover -- is unique among Turner's works in its uncompromising graphic approach: near-solid red marrying figure and space through tone, with intricate ornaments superimposed. . Facial features and background elements are secondary, #hatching and other detailing have been almost completely abandoned in the process.
