Changes can start slowly and they can often take winding path, just focus on keeping the momentum. Imagine thousands of tributaries leading to a big river and ultimately to the wide ocean. Know where are you going, just keep moving forward and trust in your abilities (unknown) . . . . . . . . #painting #acrylicpainting #lifequotes #art#artistsoninstagram #selfportrait #portraitpainting #artwork #acrylicpouring #womenportrait #femaleportrait #portraits #trustyourintuition #trusttheprocess #spirituality #artcurators #artstore #canadianartists #pai#painternstagram #painter #artcollector #collectors #originalart #contemporaryart #art #art_spotlight #art_sharing #paintbrush

Rukmin Devi Arundale made a major impact on Natyam in what we see today. The fact that ‘Kalakshetra’ is considered to be a separate bani on its own speaks volumes to her legacy to this day. Some say she is the reason why the arts became more secular and accessible. But has Natyam become secular and accessible? It did...The emerging middle class in the 1930’s rushed to theatres to see her perform the contemporary art form we now call Bharatanatyam. And non Hindus raced to get into Kalakshetra to learn the art form. She alone opened the arts up to the world. However, what happened to the Isai Vellalars and the court musicians when colonialism hit India? Why were they not embraced ? The devadasi act (1947) damaged the arts community heavily. And they were left behind to deal with the aftermath. While we credit Rukmini Devi with some of the most incredible changes to the art, we need to acknowledge a few things: Could someone from a lower caste (someone that was not bhramin) be accepted amongst the middle class as a revival artist at that time? Could someone that was Brahmin but with darker skin tones have a say in the process at that time? What if they were middle class? What Rukmini set out to do had good intention. Maybe it was also opportunity to succeed that was heavily encased in “saving” the arts...(although one must ask if the art itself really needed saving...) but she was able to do it from a point of privilege. A privilege some still hold over other artists in this industry. Above is a picture that I stylized to be similar to Rukmini’s picture (swipe to see Rukmini). I did this to serve as a reminder that privilege is real. Over the next few weeks, I intend to go through this topic that eventually leads to my reasoning for Nadanam. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let’s be respect and mindful of one another’s opinions. Let this be an open discourse. . . . . . . . . #rukminideviarundale #kalakshetra #isaivellalar #nattuvanars #koothu #sadirattam #nadanam #balasaraswati #devadasi #madras #chennai #temple #hindutemple #indianhistory #indianclassical #bharatanatyam #natyam #secular #toronto #durhamregion #canadianartists #americanartists

So, I thought the painting was done. I even signed and wired it. Then, I decided to tweak it ‘just a little bit’. Next thing I know, it’s a completely different painting!! It happens so often: I start fiddling, and totally overwork things, losing all the spontaneity that the original may have had. In the end, I obliterated the whole thing. Et voilà, a new painting! (First photo, with the dark on the bottom, is the new version; second photo is the original, now gone, version.) So now I have to re-wire the painting, as I’ve also turned it upside down from its original orientation. But maybe I should hold off on that, as I may end up changing it again. 😏 #abstractart #originalart #womeninart #canadianartists #okanaganartists #kelowna #renatakerr

Who said you can't have a little fun while working?! I was retouching the beautiful model while her photo was being taken & I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to be a little silly. Of course I'm always professional on the job, but when you work with amazing people who truly make your job not even feel like a task, it makes me love what I do even more. Remember that people come into your life at just the right time & this man right here came into mine on my 32nd birthday in December. I am forever grateful & humbled to work with a creative mind. #paradiseinthegardenofeden #TorontoMUA #yyzmua #setlife #CanadianArtists #CanadianMade #editorial #bts #dontbesoserious #alwaysprofessional #newmovement #fas#fashion #food #music #Repost @thestoryoffashion • • • • • SOF Editorial For Tumbled Earth, Of Nature In The City.
