If the soundtrack on the new iPhone XS TV ad is familiar, that’s because it uses yet another track that samples one of the most recognisable late night grooves ever recorded – “Ike’s Rap II” by the legendary Isaac Hayes. Back in 94/95 fellow Bristolians Portishead and Tricky serendipitously used it as the basis for their own singles (“Glory Box” and “Hell Is Round The Corner” respectively) that went on to become classics in the ultimately much (unfairly in my opinion) maligned genre of trip-hop. The mists of time have clouded whether the double sampling was pure coincidence or not, but there could definitely have been a sharing of ideas as early as 1991 due to Portishead’s Geoff Barrow working with Tricky on his first release – the Betty Blue OST sampling “Nothing’s Clear.” For me, it doesn’t matter who came up with it first as both tracks have a different enough flavour to co-exist, although the Portishead album that the single featured on (“Dummy”) was much more successful with the critics, winning that year's Mercury Music Prize – beating, amongst others, Tricky’s “Maxinquaye” 👹 || #SnohAalegra #NothingBurnsLikeTheCold #IsaacHayes #IkesRapII #Portishead #GloryBox #Dummy #GeoffBarrow #Tricky #HellIsRoundTheCorner #Maxinquaye #TripHop #BristolSound #MassiveAttack #WildBunch #MercuryMusicPrize #iPhoneXS

ALL THE WALLS ARE SHAKING COS THEY WERE NEVER REAL . Smith & Mighty feat Tammy Payne "Same" (1996) . Smith & Mighty were among a group of artists who pioneered the Bristol Sound from the late 80s to mid 90s - a slow, sparse, heavy, melancholy groove that gave rise to trip hop. If you like this track, follow our 09.18 Spotify playlist for more deep atmospheric old school sounds.
