Common Grackles - 5/5/18 Oh grackles... The one on the right is poofing his feathers to be intimidating. They’re interesting, yet kind of a pain, especially in large numbers. They are a bit of a bully bird and tend to stick in groups, like other icterids; there were 50 flying around the south side of Sheboygan last summer, all depleting my feeders within a day, and then leaving a mess afterwards... So I took down my feeders until they were gone. Other birds have to eat, too. And I don’t like cleaning the feeders every day. If it was a dozen, that’s fine, but 50 is ridiculous (yes I counted). Despite their aggressiveness to other birds, their species is in a steep population decline, for two reasons: their habitat of flatlands is being altered; forests are regrowing and corn rows are being planted, which leads to the other reason – grackles love corn, so much to the point where farmers apply for permits to exterminate them to protect their crops. In my strong opinion, we should downsize our corn agricultural output regardless. 2/3 of corn produced in the US is for bio-diesel and meat farming; livestock can’t even digest corn properly, while most of the remaining 1/3 is for corn syrup - a fattening unhealthy cheaper alternative to other sugars. #conservation #wildlifeconservation #conservationphotography #animalconservation #bir#birdconservation #bird #save #the #birds #grackle #grackles #gracklesofinstagram #birdsofinstagram #birdphotography #birdman #birder #birding #birdwatching #birdwatcher #birdwatchers #birdlove #birdlover #birdlovers #amateur #photography #amateurphotography #rock #rocks #poof

Hawaii has lost more species and currently has more endangered species than any other US state. One of the most famous of these is the Akepa. A small, brightly coloured, restless honeycreeper of mountain rain forests in Hawaii. Perhaps its most noteworthy character is a lateral asymmetry of the bill: the lower mandible is curved to one side, an extremely rare trait in birds. Sadly, now extinct on Ohau, it is endangered on the big Island. To see it fly is to see nature’s incredible beauty and time’s amazing refinement...it puts you in your place in the universe with a weight that is unbearable. • • • • #akepa #haw#hawaiianakepa #honeycreeper #hawaii #bigisland #con#conservation #ecotraveller #traveldestinations_ig #hawaiilife #nature #conservation #canoncanada #birdwatching #bes#bestbirdshots #birdsofinstagram #your_best_birds #bir#birdlover> #nuts_about_birds #feather_perfection #bird_watchers_daily #eye_spy_birds #birdfreaks #birdextreme #pocket_birds #wildlifephotography #birdlover #ig_discover_birdslife #ig_birdwatchers #bestbirds #birdplanet

Under construction. To watch this male Vitelline Masked Weaver building nests was very fascinating. It used different lengths and widths of grass during different stages of the construction. One type for the anchoring knots, one for the structural stuff, on for the rain cover and finally one for interior decoration. He built several nests and also displayed vigorously for females inspecting his work, investing a huge amount of energy and time into it all. By:@naturebydanielrosengren
