Happy #EarthDay everyone! This year's Earth Day theme is "Protect Our Species" and aims to bring awareness to the importance of our creature friends and how we need to help protect them. Take bees for example. Bees are an integral part of our ecosystem. In fact, 90% of flowering plants rely on bees for pollination. This includes plants like fruits, nuts and vegetables which account for around 1/3 of the food we eat. Without bees (and other pollinating insects) these foods would simply no longer be produced. Because of the role bees play in assisting growth of these crops they actually help contribute a whopping $24 billion annually to US agriculture. ••• Unfortunately in recent times bee colonies have been disappearing leading to a declining bee population. This is due to many factors including increased use of pesticides, climate change and habitat loss. ••• Fret not though! There are ways you can help keep the bee population thriving. One easy thing to start now is to reduce your consumption of foods grown using pesticides - so switch to organic when you can. You can also help the bees by increasing their habitat space by starting a garden or planting some wildflowers. Along with that, avoiding lawn pesticides helps too. And if you're feeling a little extra you could install a bee house (like the one from @bambeco) in your garden to really encourage that population growth. Lastly, if you're feeling extra extra you can urge congress to pass the Pollinator Recovery Act, to protect the Endangered Species Act and/or also support the ban on use of pesticides. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •••⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bees are not the only species in need of our help, but they are an easy one to start with. If you want more inspiration on how you can help save other species check out the Earth Day website. There's a ton more information and resources and you can also donate to the cause. What are you doing today to celebrate and take care of Mother Earth? 🌎
