Happy 136th Birthday Josephine Nivison Hopper! ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Born in Manhattan, NY on this day, Jo was a successful painter in her own right even before she met and married Edward Hopper in 1924. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Their two-artist marriage was tumultuous and Jo’s art took a backseat to Hopper’s after they married though she had a significant influence on him. She became his sole female model, introduced him to her connections in the art world, encouraged him to use watercolor and motivated him when he didn’t want to paint. She also named some of his paintings, most notably, Nighthawks. It makes you wonder where Hopper’s career would have gone had they not been together. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Photo of Josephine and Edward Hopper ca. 1927 ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Josephine Nivison Hopper, Railroad Gates, Gloucester, 1928, Watercolor, 22 1/4 × 28 1/8 in⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ #josephinenivisonhopper #josephinehopper #happybirthday #edwardhopper #pai#painter #watercolor #muse #art#art#artiste #arthistory #nighthawks #edwardhopperhouse #museum #birthplace #historichome #artist #painter #art #artoftheday⁣ #artistsoninstagram #photooftheday #americanlife #americanart #realism #visitnyack #nyack ⁣⁣⁣#hudsonvalley⁣

Is this the tiniest Napoleon of all the satirical Napoleons? Perhaps. This hand-coloured etching was published by William Holland in June 1803. Titled ”The save-all and the extinguisher!!”, the print depicts George III standing and holding an extinguisher cone, marked ”The British Constitution”, which he is about to place on a teeny-weeny Napoleon, whose famous hat is in flames. Napoleon looks furious; he’s swinging his sword as he’s precariously balancing on Liberty’s head. Poor Liberty! She’s drowning in quicksand. The figure of Liberty is meant to act as the ”save-all” mentioned in the title: a save-all was a device used for burning the ends of a candle, or a pin placed in a candlestick. Here Liberty as a save-all is meant to act as a buffer for Napoleon’s aggressions, but she’s failing. Hence the British king comes with the extinguisher cone, saving Liberty and snuffing out the flames of the Napoleonic ambitions.
