THE FIRST RODEO IN THE STATE OF NORTH DAKOTA
Killdeer Mountain Round Up Rodeo
Some miles north of present day Killdeer, North Dakota, there used to be a little hamlet at the base of Killdeer Mountain called Oakdale. That's where city leaders from Killdeer decided to create a rodeo in 1924 and the rodeo is still going strong.
In the mid to late 50s it was moved into Killdeer and has thrived there but, as the city grew, the grounds around the rodeo shrunk and now the rodeo is moving again to a brand-spanking, shiny new, spacious location west of town.
As you can see in this photo, the arena for the rodeo was huge and bordered by automobiles when it was in Oakdale.
When it was moved to the Killdeer city limits, people sat on a hillside on the west side of the arena. Now, at the new location, arena designers have stuck with that same tradition and the new location still features a nice hillside on the west side to sit on.
Killdeer, North Dakota is real cowboy country. It's terrain is rough and it's cowboys are tough. World Champions Wayne Herman and Brad Gjermundson grew up nearby as did rodeo legend, Larry Sandvick, and so many more good cowboys and cowgirls, and its still producing great talent.
Their rodeo is coming up again the 3rd and 4th of July. So if you want to see top rodeo action in pure cowboy country, this is your spot. CHECK IT OUT: https://killdeermountainrounduprodeo.com/
