We hope this letter fills your heart the way it did ours. It’s from Berry, an Aussie farmer who at 84 years old lost his home to the recent NSW bushfires. He sent it via his wonderful sister-in-law. Thank you all for making it possible to help him with an emergency grant. And thanks SO much for writing in, Berry. You’ve made our day 😪😍

Phew! With the great news that fire conditions are easing, our focus this week was on recovery activities in affected communities. We’ve been:⁣ ➡️ Supporting people at Mallacoota and Bairnsdale in Vic.⁣ ➡️ Making weekly outreach visits to communities in Bega ⁣ ➡️ Supporting people at five recovery centres and mobile outreach services in NSW⁣ ➡️ Doing the same in the Adelaide Hills and on Kangaroo Island ⁣ ➡️ Reaching out to affected communities on the Yorke Peninsula⁣ ➡️ Supporting people impacted by the Katanning bushfire in WA⁣ ➡️ Assessing needs to inform a recovery program over at least the next 3 years⁣ ➡️ Distributing three types of immediate assistance grants ($44m has been provided to people as of yesterday)⁣ ⁣ We can do all of this because of your support. Read more on our website.

Your generosity just keeps coming. As of today, you’ve donated $150 million to the Disaster Relief and Recovery fund. Here’s how it’s being allocated to help bushfire-affected families and communities to alleviate financial hardship, rebuild and recover. Read our plan here: www.redcross.org.au/bushfirefunds

Did you know that all over the world Red Cross plays a vital role in infection control? ⁣ ⁣ • In West Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the key to containing Ebola is burying the dead safely. Red Cross teams conduct burials with respect and care. ⁣ ⁣ • In Kenya, we’re working with Maasai communities to prevent the spread of anthrax from cattle to human beings. ⁣ ⁣ • Across the Asia Pacific region Red Cross teams have been instrumental in stopping the spread of Measles through vaccinations programs and educating families on the importance of prevention. ⁣ ⁣ • Across large areas of Asia we have been controlling the spread of Dengue, by setting up field hospitals, educating communities and cleaning up mosquito-breeding sites. ⁣ ⁣ • In China, we’re tackling COVID-19 (conoravirus) with health and hygiene information, while in Australia our teams are calling people who are quarantined at home to offer emotional support.

Remember Kim from Kangaroo Island? She told us a harrowing story of how her family managed to escape the 3 January fires with only minutes to spare. Today, she’s able to tell us a different story. One of hope and new beginnings, thanks in part to a Red Cross emergency grant. #Australianbushfires #emergencygrant #relief #recovery #kangarooisland

Meet Issie, six years old and Commander of Orange Juice Sales. Issie dropped into our emergency operations centre on Friday with $120.65 for the bushfire response. She raised it selling orange juice from a table by her front gate. Why did she do it? “For children to have a room and a bed to sleep in,” she said. Her face lit up when she was told of a family with two small children who had lost their home in the Batlow fires and had used a Red Cross grant to rent an apartment. “They are just like us,” she whispered to mum, talking about her dad and little sister. Thanks so much Issie – you’re welcome in our team anytime! ❤️
