On The Come Up By Angie Thomas This is the highly anticipated second novel by Angie Thomas, the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning The Hate U Give. Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But it’s hard to get your come up when you’re labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral…for all the wrong reasons. Bri soon finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. But with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri doesn’t just want to make it—she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be. Insightful, unflinching, and full of heart, On the Come Up is an ode to hip hop from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; and about how, especially for young black people, freedom of speech isn’t always free. We are sad to announce the passing of Andrea Levy. A truly noteworthy author whose novels captivated the Black British experience. A statement from Andrea Levy’s family said she lost her battle to Cancer. Levy was born in 1956 to Jamaican parents who had travelled to England on the Empire Windrush in 1948. She was best known for the best-selling Small Island, about two Jamaicans who came to England after World War Two, and The Long Song, her last novel. The 2010 novel was nominated for the Booker Prize and was adapted by BBC One last year. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this sad time. 📚 Open: Tuesday - Saturday: 11am - 6pm Thursday: 11am - 8pm Closed: Sunday & Monday 📚 Please encourage your friends and family to like and follow us on Facebook, Twitter  and instagram @newbeaconbooks 📚 #newbeaconbooks #KnowledgeIsPower #Continuing50yearsofhistory #JohnLaRose #visionary #author #BlackBritishHistory #Trinidad #CaribbeanBooks #bookshop #BlackBooks #PanAfrica #BlackHistory #SupportBlackBusinesses #Culture #caribbeanhistory #Africanhistory #GeorgePadmore #50years

The Isis Papers By Dr Frances Cress Welsing Originally published in 1982, this book is a front runner in the most requested league tables. During the course of the struggle of African people against European racism, brutality and domination, many innovative thinkers have risen from our ranks. The greatest and most courageous scholars have devoted their lives to the pursuit of an explanation for the virtually inherent animosity most white people appear to have toward people of color / Unlike her predecessors, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, a brilliant, Washington, DC psychiatrist has rejected conventional notions about the origin and perpetuation of racism. Cake anyone?? 🍰 🧁 Black Girl Baking By Jerrelle Guy @chocolateforbasil Jerrelle's Honey Wheat Cinnamon Raisin Bread smells of the sweetbread her father would use to pack his lunch every morning. Her Bruleed Buttermilk Pie mimics the cracking surface of the creme brulee her great aunt used to make for her on special occasion. Drenched in imagery, these healthy recipes are like therapy, bringing the reader back in time to appreciate the simple pleasures of childhood using the five senses. Jerrelle Guy is the creator of Chocolate For Basil, a vegetarian blog that has been featured on Vogue.com, Food52 and in the Boston Globe, to name a few. Her Instagram is full of stunning photography and has over 41,000 followers. These recipes tell Jerrelle's story while urging the reader to step away from the book and submerge themselves in the senses of baking - feel for clumps in the dough, smell when the nuts are toasted, hear the hollow knock of a perfectly cooked loaf of bread. With incredible baked goods with a soul food twist like Five Spice Baked Rice Pudding, Brown Sugar Plantain Galette, Corn and Serrano Souffle and Sticky Date Sheet Cake, Black Girl Baking is a book to be remembered. This book will contain 75 recipes and 75 photographs, each with vegan alternatives. Does someone need to hear this..... Black Girl Magic By Mahogany L. Browne @mobrowne Black Girl, they say you ain't 'posed to be here. Much of what 21st century culture tells black girls is not pretty: Don't wear this; don't smile at that. Don't have an opinion; don't dream big. And most of all, don't love yourself. In response to such destructive ideas, internationally recognised poet Mahogany Browne challenges the conditioning of society by crafting an anthem of strength and magic undeniable in its bloom for all beautiful Black girls. She has travelled the world sharing her vision of Black Girl Magic, and now in collaboration with artist Jess X. Snow, presents her acclaimed tribute in a visual form. Black Girl Magic is a journey from girlhood to womanhood and an invitation to readers to find magic in themselves. New for the younger reader aged 6+ Being Ben By Jacqueline Roy A quirky Racing Read featuring a British Jamaican family in a contemporary setting. Ben is a boy with a lively imagination and a tendency to worry. He’s scared of lots of things – the new baby (it will have green hair and yellow eyes and poo and scream all the time), nasty stripes (they’re everywhere) and the class bully (although it turns out he’s scared of a few things himself…) When a neighbour’s pet snake escapes a strange reversal occurs: suddenly everyone else is terrified, and Ben becomes the local hero, because there’s one thing he’s not afraid of: snakes! New for the younger reader aged 12+ Nothing But the Truth By Dick Lehr Inspired by the true story of a young man's false imprisonment for murder, this is a gripping novel about a daughter’s fight for justice against the odds. In his first book for teenagers, Dick Lehr, a former reporter for the Boston Globe’s famous Spotlight Team, has re-imagined a case he investigated to create a compelling story about a daughter determined to prove her father’s innocence. On a hot summer night in Boston, a thirteen-year-old African-American girl became the innocent victim of gang-related gunfire. Amid public outcry, an immediate manhunt was on to catch the murderer, and a young African-American man was quickly apprehended, charged, and – wrongly – convicted of the crime. Trell was only a baby when her father was imprisoned, but she has always been certain of his innocence. Twelve years after his conviction, she persuades a down-on-his-luck reporter and a determined lawyer to help clear her father’s name. As they attempt to uncover back-door deals, track down crucial witnesses and unearth vital evidence that will prove her father’s innocence, it becomes clear that some people in the neighbourhood want to keep this information hidden – at any cost.
