#humansofneighborhoodyoga: Julia Rechenbach-Moomaw is a long-time part of our community. She recently made the leap to becoming a Lotus Member, which gives her unlimited classes, She has taken over 130 hours of classes in the past 2 years. Here is her #yogajourney: “I found yoga just a few years ago. Before, I had trained with weights or with Pilates but was not able to work around my knee and shoulder injuries. The massage therapist who helped me with a frozen shoulder suggested I try a Gentle Yoga class. This is how I started in Vicki’s class, back at the original Shanti Way studio. And I never looked back! I love the community that was created when Neighborhood Yoga moved into the space on King Street. I found that Yin Yoga especially nourishes my joints and lengthens my muscles for the activities that I love most of all: hiking and building ceramic sculpture. Now I feel able to visit classes of other instructors as well and love sensing the possibility for so much more growth! I love yoga, not only for the added flexibility and strength it has given me, but for the grounding, the coming home to myself in a slower, more meditative practice. I have made wonderful new friends in the studio who are on a similar path and am so thankful for this new world that has opened up for me! Last but not least, it is always uplifting to walk into such a beautiful space and gaze up at the ceiling in the studio- that is a piece of art in itself!” #gentleyoga #yogacommunity #yinyoga

Chaturanga Dandasana- or 4 limbed Staff Pose. One of the most challenging poses we do in a vinyasa flow class. Injuries can be happen over time if done improperly again and again. The shoulders and the wrists are taking a lot of the weight so care needs to be taken to protect these delicate joints. One important point is to keep the shoulders at the same level of the elbows, If you are building strength, the shoulder may hover above the level of the elbows. You can also have less of an angle in the wrists too. Don't be concerned about having a perfect 90 degree angle. Keep your collarbones broad and the shoulder blades firmly into the back. Press your hands into the earth. Bring your knees down when you need to in order to avoid the shoulders feeling unstable, unsafe or carrying too much weights. Keep your elbows closer into the rib cage. Pull the front body in towards the back body. Please, feel free to ask questions about this or any other pose!
