Mistress Mary rules over the Stable Yards from the shade. She, along with her brothers Henry and Arthur, are feline ambassadors for the working side of Middleton Place National Historic Landmark. Come by and learn some history about the enslaved workers here on the plantation, and how they would have interacted with and cared for the animal population on the property. There's something new to learn everyday at Middleton Place! . . . . . #middletonplace #nationalhistoriclandmark #historic #plantation #enslavedhistory #18thcentury #19thcentury #enslavedworkers #enslavedculture #stableyards #cats #animalhusbandry #artisanworkers #craftworkers #stablecats #catsofinstagram #calicokitty #marymiddleton #explorecharleston #discoversc #findyourview #findyourpath #explorehistory

Independence Weekend activities were a *blast*, even when the weather wasn't cooperative! The fun continues tomorrow, on July 4th! While the cannon crew will be gone, we'll still have family fun activities, water and lemonade, and ice cream! Come hear Declaration Signer Arthur Middleton, escaped slave Charles Middleton, and Mrs. Hester Middleton Drayton all talk about what "declaring Independence" means to them. There will be crafts and games, and a Declaration reading 5 minutes before every house tour. Come celebrate! Huzzah! . . . . . #middletonplace #nationalhistoriclandmark #historic #plantation #gardens #enslavedhistory #18thcentury #18thcenturylife #womenshistory #americanhistory #independenceday #independenceweekend #declarationofindependence #life #liberty #pursuitofhappiness #unalienablerights #explorehistory #explorecharleston #discoversc #findyourview #findyourpath #loveyourlandmark

Yesterday, on the 276th birthday of our very own founding father, Declaration of Independence signer Arthur Middleton, 58 candidates were sworn in as brand new US citizens at Middleton Place National Historic Landmark. U.S. District Court Judge, the Hon. Richard Gergel administered their Oath of Allegiance, and poignantly reminded all in attendance that this is a nation of immigrants. We are proud to host Naturalization Ceremonies every year on the anniversary of Arthur's birth; it is important now more than ever to connect our history with our future. We celebrate Arthur and his Liberty-loving brethren who chose to rebel against the standing government; and we honor those whose migration to this continent was forced. Middleton Place Foundation congratulates our newest American citizens from 27 different countries, and wishes them all joy and success as they pursue life, liberty, and happiness here. . . . . . #middletonplace #nationalhistoriclandmark #18thcenturyhistory #foundingfather #naturalizationceremony #naturalization2018 #newamericancitizens #nationofimmigrants #welcometoamerica #landofthefree #homeofthebrave #unalienablerights #life #liberty #pursuitofhappiness #historymeetsfuture #enslavedhistory #importantpast #explorehistory #explorecharleston #discoversc #findyourview #findyourpath #loveyourlandmark

Today we mark the breaking of chains. We remember the freedom from bondage. We rejoice in the proclamation of Freedom for All. Though problems and opinions continue to divide us as a people, Middleton Place National Historic Landmark pauses to reflect on the official end of slavery in the United States. Middleton Place Foundation is dedicated to memorializing and continuing to tell the stories of the generations of enslaved workers who were forced to call this property home. From those who never knew the breath of freedom, to those who heard the proclamation of it on this landscape, we remember. We commit to saying your names and telling your stories. Celebrate Juneteenth! . . . . . #middletonplace #nationalhistoriclandmark #historic #plantation #enslavedhistory #18thcentury #19thcentury #stableyards #breakingchains #juneteenth #weremember #enslavedlife #enslavedculture #enslavedinterpretation #emancipation #explorehistory #explorecharleston #discoversc #findyourview #findyourpath #loveyourlandmark

In Philadelphia on June 14, 1777, the Flag Act of 1777 was passed by the Second Continental Congress, of whom Arthur Middleton was a delegate. 'Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation'. Happy Flag Day, and Happy Birthday to the United States Army. . . . . . #middletonplace #nationalhistoriclandmark #historic #plantation #2ndcontinentalcongress #arthurmiddleton #scdelegate #flagday #flagday2018 #grandoldflag #starsandstripesforever #flagact1777 #18thcentury #18thcenturylife #revwarhistory #colonialamerica #happybdayarmy #usarmy #army243rd #militaryhistory #explorehistory #explorecharleston #discoversc #findyourview #findyourpath #loveyourlandmark

Even during the summer in an 18th century, landscaped, green garden - there is still color to be found! The last of the gladiolas and day lillies are blooming, and hydrangeas are on their way to full glory!
