“Huanca’s practice is[…]complex and built around a lateral attunement, a listening in the round. One can find the same type of active attention in improvised music, where performers attentively watch, hear, and play off one another. In Obsidian Ladder, these dynamic encounters feed the movements and behavior of the models as much as they dictate how visitors navigate the room. The work produces an awareness of others but also of the possibility of the present.” – Ceci Moss, Universal Tissue, 2019. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #DonnaHuanca #OBSIDIANLADDER @ruaminx Photo by @white1977 for @joshuawhitephotography

This was what we all wanted, or at least what I wanted. She blinked, backtracking because she had walked past the corner store, her mind a scroll of memes aggregating the all-consuming desire to stay in bed. Every email ping felt like a welcome escape from spelunking through rivals’ vacation photos, and yet the email itself was not welcome. Everyone was asking her to do something else, to follow up, to make a deadline. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Anna Uddenberg’s current exhibition, Privé is accompanied by digital brochure, featuring an original essay, Imagined Spa, by Natasha Stagg. Now available in the #MAFBookstore: Donna Huanca’s monograph from her 2019 Copenhagen Contemporary solo exhibition LENGUA LLORONA—the artist’s first in Scandinavia, as well as @cop@copenhagen_contemporary first performance-based commission. This site-specific, immersive-installation comprises painting, sculpture, sound, scent and live performance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “LENGUA LLORONA stages the unfolding of a vibrant and colorful visual language. The cohesive works generate a spiritual energy and symbolic gestures which define the impact of Donna Huanca’s unique aesthetics: the creation of sensorial worlds and contagious affect.” –Aukje Lepoutre Ravn ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #DonnaHuanca #CopenhagenContemporary @ruaminx @copenhagen_contemporary @auklera

While perusing the #MAF#MAF lobby, visitors will notice a familiar, yet obsolete object on the wall—Adam McEwen’s rendering of a payphone, completely in graphite. If not already inaccessible, upon further inspection, one finds an essential part is missing: the phone receiver itself. “A lot of things I’ve made in graphite…are analogies for nondelivery. That sense of wanting to deliver and failing—art can feel a bit like that.” – Adam McEwen. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #AdamMcEwen, Payphone, 2018, currently on view at #MAF!

Anna Uddenberg’s interest in femme as figuration is geared towards exploring power dynamics in the service domain, and disputes the idea of femininity by revealing what happens when these roles are amplified and over-performed to a degree of uncanny absurdity. Don’t miss her show, Privé, currently on view at #MAF#MAF! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Installation view of Anna Uddenberg: Privé at #MAF. Courtesy of the artist and Gaga, Mexico City and Los Angeles. “The model can rest [on the sculpture] or they can stand, and that will complete the image…We’re all doing this together. Usually, I’ll show them a sculpture and say, “What do you want to do with this? How do you feel that you fit into it?” – Donna Huanca, Donna Huanca in Conversation with Jamillah James, 2019. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #DonnaHuanca #OBSIDIANLADDER @ruaminx Photo by Elsa Kostic.
