#VintageStyle | La Toya Jackson had no shortage of men wanting to be with her in the late 1970s and 1980s. There was Eddie Murphy, Mike Tyson, Rick James and many more vying for her attention and affection. But in the end it would be a con man by the name of Jack Gordon who would win La Toya's heart -- then shatter it into a million different pieces by controlling her and abusing her. Actually, Jack never did win La Toya's heart -- he just "took it" when he dragged her to the altar and forced her to marry him in 1989. This would be the beginning of a long nightmare for La Toya -- a nightmare that had her cowering in fear as Jack isolated her from her family and routinely beat her. Jack first met La Toya in 1985 when he was pretending to be a television producer. He claimed to be working on a music video show that he wanted La Toya to host. The show never materialized, but a friendship between them did. Jack promised to do wonders for La Toya's career and, sadly, she fell for it. She started obeying his every word, believing it would lead her to superstardom, but it only led her to a life of hell. Jack cut La Toya off from her family and started controlling every aspect of her life. He forced La Toya to pose nude for Playboy and make damaging accusations against her brother, Michael Jackson, and her father, Joe Jackson. He also forced her to do sexual "things" that made La Toya sick to her stomach. Jack even tried to prostitute her out to Mike Tyson for $100k, but Mike Tyson rejected the offer and told Katherine what Jack was doing to her daughter. La Toya was terrified to say no to Jack, as she knew she would get a beating for it if she ever did. In 1993 Jack was arrested for beating La Toya with a brass dining room chair that left contusions on her face, arms and legs. The beatings only got worse from there. Then, in 1997, La Toya finally found the courage to leave Jack after she found out he was going to force her to be in a pornographic film. La Toya fled and never looked back. Today she's living her best life as a survivor while Jack is in the ground... dead... where he belongs!

#VintageStyle | (Continued) When Billy Strayhorn arrived in Los Angeles he didn't find the iconic Lena Horne that we think of and remember today (she was far from that at the time). Instead, he found a shy, scared, lonely and insecure Lena Horne who was in need of a friend -- so he became her friend. Billy started to build up Lena's confidence and self-esteem. He also started teaching her how to command the stage and engage her audience while performing. Under his guidance Lena Horne became a completely different woman -- a woman who was bolder than ever and more confident in herself. She credited Billy for this transformation. In just a short period of time Billy became Lena Horne's everything -- her confidant, her protector and her best friend. And then Lena started having feelings for him that made her want to be more than just best friends -- feelings that made her want to be Billy Strayhorn's wife! The fact that Billy was gay (openly gay at that) didn't seem to bother her at all. She was madly in love with him and willing to risk it all to be "Mrs. Strayhorn." But while Lena was developing crazy feelings for Billy, Billy was developing crazy feelings for someone else -- another woman's husband (yeah, this situation was a hot mess!). Lena tried everything in her power to "change" Billy, but he was gay and there was no changing that. Lena was devastated when she realized that her and Billy would never be a couple. As for Duke Ellington and Lena Horne's affair? That quickly ended at the behest of Billy Strayhorn. Billy encouraged Lena to forget about Duke and get on with her life, as Duke had a million and one different women waiting on him to marry them. Duke did set a wedding date for his ladies, though. It was in the month of Neveruary in the year 5020! Lena Horne and Billy Strayhorn remained the best of friends until his death in 1967. Lena sunk into a deep depression after he died. And although she would date other men and remarry (her first husband was Louis Jones), Lena maintained throughout her life that the only man she ever truly loved was Billy Strayhorn. He was her soulmate and the love of her life... but a love she could never have. The End!

#VintageStyle | He wanted absolutely nothing from her -- just the absolute best for her. And that's why Lena Horne fell in love with a man who just so happened to be... well... gay! That man was Billy Strayhorn (pictured) and he was Duke Ellington's right hand man. Billy was a musical genius who helped Duke write and compose some of his greatest songs from the 1930s - 1960s. Billy was considered Duke's problem solver, as anytime Duke had a problem musically, he would turn to Billy and Billy would solve the problem for him. But in 1941 Duke had a different kind of problem that needed solving -- and that problem was Lena Horne. You see, Duke Ellington and Lena Horne had been involved in a secret love affair that was becoming problematic -- mainly because Lena, according to the "rumor mill," was becoming too clingy and demanding of his time. Duke was finding it difficult to entertain his other ladies with Lena constantly breathing down his neck. So in 1941 he figured out a solution to this problem. His friend Felix Young, who was a nightclub owner, had asked him if he knew of any singer who could headline a new nightclub for him in L.A. Duke said he did -- his girl Lena Horne. Lena wasn't too thrilled about the idea, as she had no plans of ever leaving New York for Los Angeles. But Duke insisted that she go and try her hand out west. This, according to the "rumor mill," was a way for Duke to create some separation between himself and Lena Horne. But Duke didn't want to lose her either, so he planned on sending Billy Strayhorn out to L.A. to keep a close eye on her once she settled in -- and to make sure no one else got too close to Lena. Billy Strayhorn was a safe bet to send, as he was gay with no sexual (or romantic) interest in women whatsoever. But little did Duke Ellington know that the very thing he was trying to prevent was about to happen anyway -- because his girl Lena Horne was about to fall for another man... and that man was Billy Strayhorn! To be continued...

#Vin#Vintagee | Before Nipsey Hussle was doing his thing on Slauson Avenue by reinvesting in his community, actress Marla Gibbs was doing her thing in the Crenshaw/Leimert Park area by reinvesting in her community. In 1990 she bought the 1,000 seat Art Deco Theater for $3 million dollars. Gibbs intended to rehabilitate the entire area starting with its most visible landmark -- the Art Deco Theater. After purchasing the property she renamed it the Vision Theatre Complex and dreamed of using it to host music events, talent shows, poetry readings, book signings and town hall meetings for the community. But Gibbs' purchase of the theater came at one of the worst times in Los Angeles history -- and that's because two years after buying the theater, the L.A. riots occurred. For six whole days South Central L.A. burned. And although Gibbs' theater was spared from destruction, the surrounding area was not. It would take years for South Central to rally back from the devastation (some areas never came back). Gibbs struggled to keep the theater open but eventually lost the property in 1997. Although things didn't work out the way Marla Gibbs hoped they would, shout out to that Queen for at least trying! 馃檶馃従 | Fun Facts: Some of the scenes from the film "A Thin Line Between Love and Hate" were filmed at Marla Gibbs' Vision Theatre. | c. 1990s. #MarlaGibbs #Actress #Legend #Icon #Hollywood #OldHollywood #Vintage #Retro #Oldschool #LA #SouthCentral #PhotoOfTheDay #PicOfTheDay #BlackIsBeautiful #BlackGirlsRock

#Vin#Vintagee | The #KingOfPop, Michael Jackson, poses with his childhood friend Rockwell. Rockwell, whose real name is Kennedy Gordy, is the son of Motown founder Berry Gordy. In 1984 he stunned everyone (including his father) by not only having the #1 R&B -- and #2 Pop -- song in the country, but also having none other than Michael Jackson (and Jermaine Jackson) singing on the song as well. That song, called "Somebody's Watching Me," became a platinum selling smash hit. But unfortunately for Rockwell, this song would be his only smash hit, as he would quickly fade from the music charts shortly thereafter and fade from public memory, too. In May of 2017 Rockwell was arrested for physically assaulting his housekeeper over a sandwich. Then in November of 2018, he was arrested again for beating a woman with a chair at a Hollywood hotel. | c. 1980s. #MichaelJackson #Rockwell #Vintage #Retro #Style #Oldschool #PhotoOfTheDay #PicOfTheDay #TBT

#VintageStyle | Residents of Atlanta, Georgia, couldn't believe what they were hearing on the morning of August 8, 1996 -- and that's because what they were hearing was that prominent businessman Lance Herndon was dead! Someone had bludgeoned him to death inside of his home as he slept in his own bed. Homicide detectives theorized that the killer had straddled Lance and, using a heavy wrench, bashed his head in until his skull was fractured. This clearly was a crime of passion, which led detectives to start looking into Lance's personal life to see what they could find. What they found was that Lance was not only a successful businessman, but a successful playboy, too. There were dozens of women he had dealt with in the past -- and still quite a few he was dealing with at the time of his death. One woman was Jamaican born Dionne Baugh (2nd pic). She was a vibrant young lady in her 20s who was on the hunt for a sugar daddy -- a sugar daddy she hoped would be Lance Herndon. Dionne knew of Lance's reputation for being a big spender with the ladies in his life. She also knew that he was hosting a birthday bash for his 41st birthday and made sure to be there. Dionne wore the sexiest outfit that night as she introduced herself to Lance. Lance obviously liked what he saw in Dionne, because he started dating her immediately. And just as Dionne suspected, Lance began lavishing her with money and gifts. He gave her his credit card to use and his Mercedes Benz to drive. But just as Dionne was settling into her new lavish lifestyle, Lance took it all away. He had had his fun with Dionne and was ready to move on. This infuriated Dionne, who did everything she could to please him sexually. She had even slept with one of his friends when Lance asked her to just to make him happy. And now he was dogging her out like this? HELL NO! Dionne wasn't about to let that slide! On the night of August 7, 1996, Dionne slept with Lance one last time before luring him to sleep. As Lance slept Dionne grabbed a wrench and bludgeoned him to death. Lance Herndon was just 41 years-old when he died. Check the comments for additional details...
