It’s always exciting to have athletes come try out our facility when they are in town, especially hockey players from around the 🌎 This past week we had the opportunity to work with Josh (@ojghockey) and Alex 🇪🇸 for a couple of sessions. Alex is from Spain and primarily plays roller hockey. He is an amazing player to work with. Great work ethic, asked lots of questions, and showed a crazy amount of knowledge about the game! With the Stanley Cup Finals wrapping up Wednesday night we wanted to highlight the Conn Smythe winner Ryan O’Reilly. This guy has been working his a** off his entire life for moments like these and he definitely proved that he is prepared for a challenge. Recent videos have shown the unorthodox training he has been doing over the years to put his mind and body into a place of total and complete focus. Having total control of your stick and being able to bat passes out of the air, tip shots in, and hit pucks in the net off the ice is a difficult skill to master. It all starts with hand eye coordination practice. So feel free to have fun and mix in some of these during your workouts in between sets/before or after as well. Sometimes as we get older we forget to train the fundamentals involved with playing the sport. A lot of players use way too many crossovers when trying to gain speed skating backwards. Yes, to get the feet moving but you want to use your c-cuts to allow yourself to move side to side more effectively. It’s important to master the fundamentals whether it comes to your shooting, your puck handling, or your skating abilities. A quality house is built on a solid foundation. A quality athlete is built on great fundamentals.

Here are a few quick and easy stickhandling drills you can do almost anywhere with limited equipment. Using a stick or even just a line/shoe/anything to jump over you can try these footwork with stickhandling drills as well as a lateral hop while handling the ball. You don’t necessarily need a a bosu ball for the next ones. Standing on the ground you can develop balance and strength through each leg as you stickhandle around your body. Once this is mastered, challenge yourself with a bosu ball or even a balance board. @coach.mattthomas313 here... Dedicated today to skills training with my new twigs (which I will almost certainly break in the very near future). I always try to stick handle and shoot with gloves and skates on for the best translation into game situations. Most importantly: intensity is absolutely essential. You cannot just go through the motions and expect results.
