History has just been made. Ursula von der Leyen is the first female European Commission president after 383 MEPs back her candidacy, only nine votes above the 374 threshold. In her speech to the MEPs, she addressed several topics. On Brexit, she said she regretted but respected the referendum vote and would be willing to extend the UK's departure date beyond October 31. She also promised a "green deal" for the EU in her first 100 days of office and said that she wanted Europe to be the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050. After the result was announced, she said, "The confidence you placed in me is confidence you placed in Europe." "The task ahead humbles me," she said. "My work starts now. Let us work together constructively." Want to learn more about the first female European Commission president? US President Donald Trump tweeted yesterday about "Progressive Democrat Congresswomen," saying, "why don't they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came." Many people on social media accused the President of racism, but this did not seem to deter him. Today, Trump renewed his attack and called on the congresswomen to apologize to him. The four congresswomen cannot disagree with him more. All four of them stood their ground. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: "You are angry because you don’t believe in an America where I represent New York 14, where the good people of Minnesota elected Ilhan Omar, where Rashida Tlaib fights for Michigan families, where Ayanna Pressley champions little girls in Boston." Meanwhile, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib tweeted: "Want a response to a lawless & complete failure of a President? He is the crisis. His dangerous ideology is the crisis. He needs to be impeached."
