Artist Spotlight Super Power: Courage I was a fast runner. I really thought I was a fine tuned machine, where every piece of me was a completely different team of people working together to accomplish this one goal! “To run as fast as I could!” Every super hero has a gift And I thought my gift was to “Bolt!” I was like lightning! You’d think that I really just loved to run, but that was not the case. Super hero’s have weird ways of finding out that they’re special. And finding out what they’re really good at. For me I found out that I was good at running because of fear. Fear of David, the Cypress Bully. Class would let out back in 1979 when I was 7 years old. David would see me from across the way and for whatever reason I was his enemy! He and his band of larger than me kids would put one foot in front of the other in quick bigger kid foot steps towards me. The looks on their faces were not expressing love. And some how I always knew to just run! Run! Like nothing else mattered. Run! Like it were the end of the world! Run! Like the bathroom was too far away and the turtles head was peeking out of its shell! I’d make it home and at peace. And the bad kids were no where to be found most of the time.. Until the day they caught up and waited for me outside. My super hero partner at the time was my Mom. I didn’t realize it until later, but she was my power source. When I arrived home she always had a meal ready for me, and I needed it after draining all my energy running. On this one day after eating with my mom. She told me as the bully was outside waiting for me, now your going to go out there and stand your ground. I was afraid for my life, Tears running down my face, I plead for her to let me stay inside. But she pushed me out. I sucked it up, went right up to David and punched him in the face! He stepped back and his nose got red as Rudolph’s nose, He looked at me confused And walked away. I never had a problem with David again. I continued running, But I found out what my true super power is: Courage! And I thank my mom for helping me find that. Could be why I love singing. @drange_live #hiphop #dreadlocks #artist #story #rap #talent

The Cowboy and the Piano I was having the time of my life playing Cowboy. But mamma didn't want me to grow up to be a cowboy. Mamma wanted me to be a good person, have a good cubicle job, and play the piano! And so at 4 years old she put me in piano lessons. The color-coded keys of my teacher's piano felt my first energies. At 5 years old, my mom and I moved from Sonora to Mexico City, and I continued to play the Piano there. I played at school, in concert halls, in community spaces. Then one day I switched to the guitar. I really started experiencing a whole new realm outside of the structured classical piano etudes. I've lived in a few cities around the world, and got to travel a lot as well. I've had the blessing of being able to explore different styles of music and culture. In 2017 I moved to Los Angeles, met some dope musicians and formed a band, Stone the Rich. The flush of laughter We were all 5 years old in 1980 Hanging out near the side door of my parents home on Mallison street in South Gate. I was a clever kid and a funny one at that. I used to make up my own jokes and all my friends would sit around and listen. One day I made up a song while hanging out with my buddies Carlitos and Chancla.. I started to sing: We were all sitting, looking around at the waaaa-ter! The land below our bottoms was a floating island and we were siiiinging..... oh bop, oh bee, oh fly, come on human, try oh try Extend your hand And don’t be shy The buttons there for A flush... that’s why! Oh bop, oh bee, oh fly We’re sitting on a floating poop, A humans digesting Ice cream scoop. And I’m a fly Starring at myself In the reflection Of the waaaa-ter! My friends laughed their their stomachs off.. And then.. My shirt lifted my body from behind me, and my head felt a big smack of a construction belt! And I heard my friends really laughing, but they were still outside and I was in. My dad was kicking my ass! And that was the last time I made a joke. Until 3 years ago when I was 40 Selling title insurance somehow brought out the funny in me again. Title insurance! Today I am the producer of many comedy shows. Including tomorrow’s show at the Tacos n Miches on Philadelphia ave in uptown Whittier. —————-———-—-——The Mariachi that made me ———————————————————-The drive to our destination seemed like forever one Saturday night. But then we arrived and my family and I all got out of the car. Behind us was another car with men in it. They also exited the car. We stood there looking at each other. And then I noticed they were dressed like my dad. In weird shiny fitted perfectly ironed pants, fluffy shirts and huge hats. They all reached into the trunks of their cars and pulled out long suit case looking boxes. There were people everywhere, but it was so quiet. Children just staring at us instead of playing. We walked towards the crowd and they began to clap. Everyone followed us behind the house into an area with a large cement floor and my dad and the men opened their boxes. They each removed a musical instrument, stood tall next to each other and started to play! They all were part of a Mariachi band and I was mesmerized! I thought about that night for the rest of the summer. I would pretend to be a musician myself, mimicking the many different instruments, singing in spanish and dancing around the kitchen table. When school started again at Elizabeth Hudson Elementary in Long Beach in 1994, I walked into the bus that picked me up to take me to my 3rd grade class. I noticed one of my friends was carrying a long suit case looking box. I was Intrigued. I asked her what was in the box, she said a Violin. Her parents had bought it for her so that she could learn to play it. I asked her if she could open it and show me. She opened the case, took out the violin, took out her bow, and she played a little scale she was working on. I immediately fell in love with the violin. It grabbed my attention and I was amazed by it. My dad picked me up after school that day and I remember telling him that I wanted a violin. ————the rest is on Facebook at Downeywood @coatlmusic #violin #violinist #downeyca #losangeles #musician #mariachi #bow #scale #band #livegroup
