MEEY YOUR NOLA TEACHERS: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @Sistayogi Valerie first experienced yoga in 2007, while living in Chicago and undergoing a complete lifestyle change. She lost over 70lbs and transitioned from a meat based to a plant based diet. In 2011, she developed a full time yoga practice after completing her first 30 day challenge. At the time, Valerie noticed she was often the only women of color in the classes she was taking and was determined to help the culture of yoga evolve in New Orleans. In late 2013, Valerie immersed herself in a 200 hour power yoga training with Free to Be Power Yoga. Valerie launched the Ohm Well in early 2015, which is a holistic health and wellness company designed to help clients heal themselves from the inside out. The Gambit Weekly published an article about Valerie’s Black and Brown Bodies in Motion Class (BBM), which centralizes the complex identities of Black and Brown individuals and is open to self-identified persons of color only. BBM is a direct response to the marginalization and or invisibility of yogis of color in traditional yoga studios and classes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In addition to teaching yoga, Valerie is a Senior City Planner with the City of New Orleans as well as a level IV Reiki master. She also launched the first ever yoga wellness program for city employees at New Orleans’ City Hall, which is in collaboration with the Chief Administrative Office and the New Orleans Health Department. Valerie has led classes at various locations throughout the City of New Orleans including Life Yoga Studio, FitNola parks, Dancing Grounds, Swan River Arabi, Longue Vue House and Gardens and Lululemon Athletica. Valerie is eager to share her love of life with others and is committed to creating a safe space for all of her students on and off the mat. Her classes are a combination of poetic sequences and infectious rhythms designed to ignite the fire within each of us. #repost 📸: @amariephotonola

MEET YOUR NOLA TEACHERS: I’m fascinated by the physical body — obsessed with anatomy, mechanics, therapeutics, innovative alignment, and using the body as a metaphor in class. I borrow from classical and tantric philosophy alike, and use stories to help understand the tough stuff of life. Most importantly, I think yoga should always be fun — both on and off the mat. Yoga helped me escape the never-ending hamster wheel in my brain, and then it showed me how to be gentler with myself and dared me to expand my expectations for myself. Laughter and singing are my preferred methods of prayer. I’m a Soul School graduate and a mentor to new teachers at the studio. When I’m not teaching, I’m coaching thoughtful leaders, marrying people (to each other!), and writing about yoga and life at www.veralester.com. @verarocks

MEET YOUR NOLA TEACHERS: I am a lifelong martial artist and Zen practitioner. I completed my 200 hour interdisciplinary teacher training at Wild Lotus Yoga Soul School in New Orleans under Sean Johnson and Mitchel Bleier in 2014. This included training in Bhakti, Tantra, and Vinyasa styles of yoga. Fascinated by the combination of yoga, martial arts and meditation found in the Budokon® system, I studied with the founder Cameron Shayne. I am the first certified Budokon®Yoga instructor in the state of Mississippi. Drawing from my years as a competitive powerlifter and athlete, my teachings emphasize functional, athletic, bio-mechanically sound movements that everyone can incorporate to improve overall strength flexibility and well being. I teach 5 public classes a week, offer advanced training seminars and private lessons. Information on classes and offerings are available at www.danielwise.net ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @budokondaniel Photo by: @amygpics

MEET YOUR NOLA TEACHERS: Ajax @magnoliayogastudio the owner, visionary and lead teacher at Magnolia Yoga Studio in downtown New Orleans. Originally from California, Ajax is of mixed heritage--Spanish & African-American and ultimately considers herself a modern-day woman of the world. She has an extensive background in Arts Education, a degree from the University of Southern California in Socio-Cultural Anthropology, several years experience in the non-profit sector along with having traveled to 30+ countries around the world finding her purpose and place within it. Ajax hails to New Orleans for the music, culture and people and feels an ancestral connection to NOLA and therefore is happy to live, serve and enjoy this 'mecca of culture & celebration'. Early on Ajax felt the calling for teaching yoga and has taught for 10 years straight almost every day since becoming certified! She believes, “when you are fortunate enough to find what you were born to do in life, the effort to study, learn and seek knowledge and understanding is an honor and pleasure!” Her passion for life, people and yoga is apparent and her vibrant energy is contagious. Ajax teaches from experience having practiced yoga for 14 years consistently. She has used the healing art form to quit smoking, manage her weight, improve her relationship to self and with family, reduce severe joint pain in her knees, eliminate her asthma condition, migraines, reduce her annual bouts of bronchitis and strengthen her resolve and confidence. One of her best attributes is helping people feel comfortable and welcomed. Ajax is also a great example of how to use yoga to fulfill a robust active and balanced lifestyle, as you will often find her teaching yoga, practicing yoga, socializing, resting, reading, cooking, studying, volunteering, networking, planning, dining out, enjoying live music, traveling, swimming, writing, dancing and living life to its fullest!
