Lenexa City Hall and the Lenexa Rec Center, both located on the new civic campus, were recently awarded the Silver Level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification (#LEED). LEED, a globally recognized symbol of excellence in green building, is administrated by the United States Green Building Council. The USGBC mission is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life. Here are some of the construction practices and sustainable features we incorporated: - 75+% of construction waste was recycled rather than sent to the landfill. - 25+% of construction materials contained recycled content and were manufactured regionally to lessen greenhouse gas emissions associated with manufacturing and transporting materials. Low-flow plumbing fixtures in both buildings promote water conservation. It’s estimated the Rec Center will save 238,902 gallons of water annually, making it 40% more water efficient than a building with conventional fixtures. City Hall’s estimated annual water savings of 123,654 gallons of water is 38% more efficient than conventional buildings. Large glazed windows which take advantage of natural daylight and occupancy sensors minimize the use of electric light. Native, drought-tolerant landscaping means there is less need for irrigation and reduces the need for fertilizers and pesticides. Low-emitting paints, sealants and flooring promote good indoor air quality. Both buildings are non-smoking facilities. The rate in which stormwater runoff leaves the campus is slower and run-off is treated by natural best practices. The campus was designed to minimize heat absorption from the sun. Examples include that a majority of parking is located under cover (rather than on surface asphalt), light-colored pedestrian walkways which provide a more natural thermal benefit, and a light-colored, thermally insulated roof which helps to mitigate heat absorption for the buildings. Recycling is encouraged throughout the campus. #GreenBuilding #Lenexa #ILikeLenexa
