We've seen enough wildlife suffer and die. 💔
A 'recreational' duck shooting season during this devastating time for native animals would compound the trauma for wildlife... and people.
Please, join us in calling for the Victorian Labor government to to protect wildife — not allow them to be maimed and killed for 'fun'! Say NO to a 'recreational' native duck shooting season by heading to the link in our bio. #BanDuckShooting#ProtectWildlife
Between bushfires and land clearing for animal agriculture and paper, koala habitat has never been so scarce. And while those rescued are receiving the very best care and will be released when they are healthy, the question must be asked, will there be anywhere safe for them to go? 😢🐨
Bulldozing of koala habitat in Portland Victoria – what we know. ▪️ An estimated 100 koalas have been killed, injured, orphaned or left to starve after what remained of their home, a former commercial bluegum plantation, was bulldozed in the west of Victoria.
▪️ The landowner, a sheep farmer, has now admitted to clearing the land for grazing and has reportedly responded by saying "it's not the big hoo-ha it's been made out to be" (http://bit.ly/2SeIFo6)
▪️ This happened on private land. There is a legal responsibility that private landowners ensure the welfare of koalas before and after clearing any trees on their property – it is still unclear exactly what has occured in this case but it would appear that there are various breaches of legislation, including the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, which we will be supporting authorities to pursue
▪️ Upon hearing about this situation on Friday, we flew vet teams in to assist with assessing and treating injured and starving animals. We have also provided funding to a local shelter that has taken in many of these rescued koalas, this will assist with building additional enclosures for these rescued animals.
▪️ We understand that specialists from the @portmacquariekoalahospital are en route to assist vet teams and carers with the care of surviving koalas.
▪️ Animals Australia has staff on the ground to assist with coordination with authorities and rescue teams, and importantly we have our legal expert there helping with the gathering of evidence
▪️ It is important to remember that while this individual situation is distressing – the situation for koalas more generally is equally critical. Habitat loss through land clearing for livestock production and paper remains the key threat to these vulnerable animals. Continued threat of logging and bushfires not only poses a tremendous challenge to their welfare, but to their existence as a species.
While surviving animals are receiving the best of care – the next challenge will be finding somewhere safe for rehabilitated animals to return to. And that is getting harder to find every single day.
More to come.
