Had a great day of rescue training in the High Country with some awesome people.
“Life is an inherently dangerous sport, and mine a bit more than others. If it wasn’t for soloing, I might have been dead already. Freesoloing isn’t a death wish, it’s a life wish. It’s the single best therapy I’ve ever found for calming my tumultuous mind. The control that I’ve developed on the wall transfers into my daily life.” - Austin Howell
Shoes untied, earbuds plugged into his iPod, red shirt, the hat, and a bag of chalk. That was Austin Howell. @freesoloist
First time I met Austin was in 2014 while camping on Shortoff Mountain. We saw a climber scaling Built to Tilt (5.10b) like it was nothing. As we looked closer, he wasn’t attached to a rope. Amazed, we went over to meet him and he acted like we’d been friends for life. He has a unforgettable personality.
Two years later he asked me to photograph him again as he climbed a vertical mile on Shortoff. He accomplished his mission and climbed just over 5,700 feet in 10 hours. He wasn’t one to give up. He was an inspiration to many. ”That photo right there has 100% become THE iconic photo as far as my climbing career is concerned!” -Austin speaking of this picture.
One of his favorite quotes:
“The best climber on earth is the one having the most fun” Alex Lowe
He died doing what he loved.

A chilly breeze swept across the hills this evening. It made for a perfect Boone summer night.
A day full of jam up training from some of the best firemen around the country.
The Stretch 2019.
I marry this girl in a lil over a month. Wow.
Also huge shoutout to @thaliavillarosa for shooting our engagement session. She does wonders, especially for me and @hannah.lannah who aren’t the most photogenic people. (I’d rather stay on the other side of the lens)
