During the height of my anxiety one of my biggest stressors was others finding out I wasn't mentally healthy. There's so much pressure in the black community to appear resilient and so mental illnesses are often ignored or criticized. I internalized those toxic beliefs and reflected them on myself. I made this for class but never showed anyone besides my professor until this year. Now I've made it to a point where I can feel wholeheartedly confident in myself. I'm blossoming into a being that I, at one point, didn't believe could exist. . I made this film as a way to acknowledge my fear of my own anxieties and self-hatred. To speak them by their names and reflect on some of the unhealthy ways I coped with them. I'll put a link in bio for the whole film. . music @fkatwigs wet wipes . . . . #instafilm #shortfilm #selfportrait #blackqueerartist #blackfilmmaker #anxiety #selflove #appreciationpost #mentalhealthawareness #experimentalfilm

I desperately want to make a children's book out of these characters. Any writers want to collab?

Another one created in 2-D design. We focused on textures and creating them using stapling and cross hatching. It took almost a week to finish this bc I didn't create any straight lines. All the line work was made using either stapling or crosshatching. It seems exhausting but let me tell you this is one of the most relaxing techniques I've ever used. I honestly would do more of these just to help with stress. The Process: I looked for textures in magazines and created a thumnail collage. Afterwards I took a picture of it and ran it through PicsArt and experimented with different edits until I found one that outlined the texture in a way they made sense to me. Then printed it larger. Using a window I placed the print under the drawing paper and outlined the basic shapes. This helped me get an understanding of where everything should go. From there it was just a matter of drawing in all the details (the relaxing part)

One of my favorite pieces created for 2-D design. We were tasked to use the collage medium to create a self portrait. This design was based off a reoccurring dream I had four nights in a row. I was walking through the woods looking for something but not sure what that something was. I found a door unattached to any walls. When I open it, it lead to a large empty room, reminiscent of a cathedral. There was a woman on the other side of the room who I could barely see. Without opening her mouth she said "Reveal yourself to me". On the second night she said "Why won't you show yourself?". I told her I didn't know who I was and she told me not to come back until I do. On the third night I came back and she wasn't there. I walked up to where she was in the other dreams where there was a large pool of water. When I looked into it I saw something similar to the image I created in the collage. On the fourth night when I open the door there were three women. The ones on the right and left I recognize as the women from the first two dreams. But the one in the middle was a unfamiliar. As I got closer I realized she was the version of myself that I saw in the pool of water. As far as style, I'm really inspired by the layout of tarot cards and I often tend to reference tarot in my work. Thank you @claranauts for the photo. I would love to do more collages with your photos . . . . #dreams #collage #collegeart #yellow #selfportrait #surrealism #blackart #queerart #blackqueerartist #colagecollectiveco #art #tarot #flowers
