The Holy Stairs in Rome. The wood that covered the stairs has been removed for the first time in 300 years. The wooden panels were installed in 1723. After removing the wood, the marble showed the marks of the millions of pillgrims who have been climbing the flight of stairs on their knees since the 4th century when St. Helen brouht them from Jerusalem. Pillgrimms will be able to climb the bare stones from today to the day of the Pentecost where the stairs will be covered again. The tradition holds that these stairs Jesus climbed when Pontius Pilate handed him over to be crucified.
