When I first moved abroad, away from my family and my twin sister Judith, I was 19 years old. Until then, Judith and I had never spent more than 4 days apart! . . It was before WhatsApp and FaceTime, and international calling was too expensive for my student budget. So she and I began emailing each other every single day to stay connected . . For about 11 years we each wrote an account of “my yesterday” and responded to each other’s emails . . What we realised after a few years of this was that we had stumbled upon a powerful tool for self-reflection and sometimes an email would begin “Hey this is gonna be a therapy email” which would then be full of rants and/or waffling on until a conclusion of “okay I’m glad I got that off my chest. I feel better now.” . . Nowadays we tend to do the same instead over voice messages and again, it’s powerful. I’ve often heard myself talking through a problem only to realise I’ve got the answer, and I just needed to say out loud what’s really on my mind . . Anyway, my point is, whether it’s journaling or calling someone to listen, often the best way to work through a problem is to get it out of your head and into words! PLEASE READ 🌏 We live in a world of convenience, and convenience is about comfort. Everything we have created is to make our lives a little easier and more comfortable. ☝️But☝️ we really are not meant to be comfortable all the time! . . We need healthy levels of stress (hormesis) for our bodies to learn resilience. We require venturing beyond our comfort zones to grow as people, in empathy and compassion . . So, constant comfort and convenience is HURTING us as a society. We’ve created a habit of expecting a quick and simple remedy to the slightest discomfort — a snack at the first sign of peckishness, a jacket at the first twinge of cold, an “unfollow” button at the glimpse of something that we disagree with . . I’ve become so aware of how much our world’s environmental issues stem from our addiction to comfort and convenience. You know what, I don’t get as close a shave with my stainless steal razor as I did with the plastic disposable ones. Organic, natural products are almost always more expensive. Recycling properly takes extra time and energy compared to just throwing things in the landfill. #firstworldproblems #amiright . . Choosing sustainable, renewable, green, etc — it’s usually not “nice as easy.” But I think we all need to GET OVER IT . . I include myself in this. I know there’s SO MUCH more I could do to contribute to a healthier planet. If we all look at ourselves and see just how many times we make a decision based on the pursuit of comfort, and recognise that DISCOMFORT IS NECESSARY, we could together make those tough decisions that will make things better in the longer term . . . . Loving your body — REALLY loving your body — should mean being IN LOVE with your body . . ❤️ Genuine unconditional love ❤️. . Think of someone that you love unconditionally — you love that person despite their flaws, you give without asking for anything in return, you are patient and kind to that person. Right? . . Can you be the same to yourself, and specifically to your body? . . I want to be madly in love, head over heals in love with my body. Love it for its flaws and love it when it doesn’t do what I want it to do. Love it when it smells and makes embarrassing noises. Love every part of it, top to bottom, inside to out. What’s YOUR yoga? . Yoga may look like a one arm hand balance or a child’s pose but REALLY ... the real yoga ... . . Perhaps that’s where you acknowledge that your handstand isn’t as strong as you want it to be, and being satisfied with that. #santosha . . For years I couldn’t do flying crow! Now I can 💁🏻‍♀️ Keep reading for how I learned!! ⬇️⬇️ . . It clicked when I learned to balance in crow with my knees right at the back of my elbows, instead of higher up the upper arms . . Swipe to see a video ➡️ and tag a friend who would find this helpful! 👫 . . With your knees right over your elbows, you stack your weight directly over your hands, and it takes a lot less effort to hold yourself up . . Next step is playing with shifting your weight slightly to one side and bringing one knee off and towards your midline . . Then you can play with slowly extending the leg back and up . . Keep the shoulders protracted and the core engaged (think cat pose) . . Shoutout to my friend and teacher @dylanwerneryoga who taught me this, and also took the photo! 📸 . .
