Japanese prints of the Kabuki theatre from the Mr. and Mrs. Herwig-Kempers collection. Over the last few years and in the years to come, Mr. and Mrs. Herwig-Kempers are donating their collection of Japanese prints devoted to the Kabuki theatre. Their passion for this typically Japanese form of theatre arose when they saw a Kabuki play in Paris. Mr. and Mrs. Herwig-Kempers have been collecting Kabuki prints for over forty years. They have collected over 1500 prints. Check stories for more info about the Kabuki Theatre. #Rijksmuseum #kabuki #kabukitheatre

It’s #WorldBookDay! Of course, we would like to share a photo of the Rijksmuseum Research Library. Did you know there are little poems written on the wall? Here’s one: “You have two eyes but only one mouth. That here you should read avidly and remain silent.” Photo: @dromelot #Rijksmuseum #librariesofinstagram #amsterdam

The peak of Mt Fuji seen through cherry blossoms and patches of mist. In addition to the very light colours in this print, Hokusai also made use of blind-printing or embossing. This is a technique in which details are made visible by raising them slightly above the surrounding area. Some of the blossoms in this print were for instance embossed. 🌸 Unfortunately Japanese prints are very sensitive to light and the colours will fade quickly. We can't display the prints all year round if we want to keep them in good condition. Until mid-October a small selection of 19th century prints relating to the Japanese male-only Kabuki theater is on view in the Rijksmuseum`s Asian Pavilion. The Rijksmuseum has acquired a rare early impression of a late medieval engraving. The 'Crucifixion with Four Angels' is one of the main works of Martin Schongauer, the most important engraver of the late Middle Ages. The acquisition has been made possible through the F.G. Waller-Fund. One of the striking features in Schongauer’s depiction is the serenity of the Virgin Mary and St John the Apostle. Four angels collect the blood from Christ's wounds in chalices, an iconographic motif that emphasizes the Son of Man’s sacrifice and the Salvation of Man. The Eucharist has rarely been depicted so powerfully. Image: The Crucifixion with Four Angels, Martin Schongauer, c. 1480 - c. 1485 #rijksmuseum #amsterdam #goodfriday
