Learning to fight Krav Maga like Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman. 💪@royelghanayan's Krav Maga Academy is the only official, internationally-recognized training center for Israeli Self Defense in the US, and it's the only one directly affiliated with the Israeli Special Forces--heavy stuff for a gym located on an unassuming stretch of Washington Boulevard in LA.👆I recently took my first class here & I'm all HYPED. Krav Maga is a military self-defense fighting style that borrows from boxing, aikido, judo, karate, & street fighting. Elghanayan is an official ambassador of Israeli Martial Arts, having trained over 30,000 special forces members. (He's got the blue belt, the 4th Degree Black Belt, and all the plaques/awards/newspaper clippings to prove it.) REKM's beginner classes follow the same training program designed for the Israeli Special Forces, including basic fighting strikes, movement, & stances. The first week of unlimited classes are free to newbies, and there's some epic and humbling photography upstairs depicting Elghanayan and Staff Sergeant Aaron Cohen's training sessions with soldiers of Duvdevan--the most elite special operations counter-terrorism unit in the world. It is not a joke. Duvdevan is known for their undercover operations in urban Palestine; perhaps you've heard of them, though little is known about the group other than that their speciality is infiltration to capture wanted militants in the West Bank. Taking the intensity down a notch: in my group classes in LA I've seen everyone from pilots to big, football-looking dudes, & lots of women who want to learn how to defend themselves from an attacker. It's not a bad skill to have, and Krav Maga is intuitive and designed for use in real life. Plus, Elghanayan has an endearing, no-bullshit demeanor. In the last class I was in a woman asked: "How do you avoid panic mode?" and his answer was a great metaphor for life: "You don't avoid panic mode," he said. "But if you are prepared--you train enough and practice going in & out of that headspace often--then you can learn to make peace with it, and eventually push through it. Panic doesn't feel like panic if you are prepared." 🙏🥊
NANA YAA ASANTEWAA (c. 1840 – 17 October 1921) was appointed queen mother of Ejisu in the Ashanti Empire—now part of modern-day Ghana—by her brother Nana Akwasi Afrane Okpese, the Ejisuhene—or ruler of Ejisu. In 1900, she led the Ashanti rebellion known as the War of the Golden Stool, also known as the Yaa Asantewaa war, against British colonialism.
When her brother died in 1894, Yaa Asantewaa used her right as Queen Mother to nominate her own grandson as Ejisuhene. When the British exiled him in the Seychelles in 1896, along with the King of Asante Prempeh I and other members of the Asante government, Yaa Asantewaa became regent of the Ejisu-Juaben District. After the deportation of Prempeh I, the British governor-general of the Gold Coast, Frederick Hodgson, demanded the Golden Stool, the symbol of the Asante nation. This request led to a secret meeting of the remaining members of the Asante government at Kumasi, to discuss how to secure the return of their king. There was a disagreement among those present on how to go about this. Yaa Asantewaa, who was present at this meeting, stood and addressed the members of the council with these now-famous words: "Now, I see that some of you fear to go forward to fight for our king. If it was in the brave days of Osei Tutu, Okomfo Anokye, and Opoku Ware I, chiefs would not sit down to see their king to be taken away without firing a shot. No European could have dared speak to chiefs of Asante in the way the governor spoke to you this morning. Is it true that the bravery of Asante is no more? I cannot believe it. It cannot be! I must say this: if you, the men of Asante, will not go forward, then we will. We, the women, will. I shall call upon my fellow women. We will fight! We will fight till the last of us falls in the battlefields." With this, she took on leadership of the Asante Uprising of 1900, gaining the support of some of the other Asante nobility.
The Dora Milaje.. badass women warriors in the film Black Panther caught my attention right away... no skimpy skirts thats serves no protection in anyway, no long hair let loose.. plus these women actually LOOKED strong... a huge breakaway from the typical pretty but not really believable Amazon Warriors in Wonder Woman. And all those kickass fight scenes... whoaaaa.
Suddenly feel like getting myself a spear... 😍
