Can too much stress lead to weight gain? . Absolutely, and the reason is due to high amount of the hormone cortisol. So how exactly are these all correlated? Great question. First, let’s understand what cortisol is and what it does. . Cortisol is the major stress hormone in the body, which is mainly released at times of stress and has many important functions in your body such as: increasing your body’s metabolism of glucose, controlling blood pressure and reducing inflammation. Cortisol (produced by the adrenal glands) is regulated by the pituitary gland (pea-sized gland at the base of the brain AKA the master gland). Over time, the constant release of cortisol (due to regular high volumes of stress) can turn from being a good thing to being pathological to the body. . Constant release of cortisol may increase your risk of developing insulin resistance, raises your blood sugar, alters appetite, reduces ability to burn fat and increases rate at which you store fat. . High stress > High Cortisol > High Insulin > Elevated Blood Sugar > Weight Gain . So how does naturally occurring hormone (cortisol) become a bad thing due to a natural cause (stress)? . There can be multiple causes. Most commonly, I see it as a “tolerance” or a “negative feedback loop” meaning the further stress to the body, over-stimulation may “tip” the scale in favor of negative changes. Almost like a protective mechanism which may occur to prevent the onslaught of damage that occurs with further stress . How do we solve this? One way (easier said than done) is to reduce or eliminate the source of stress. Another is to not “over-exercise”. We usually say working out is a great way to relieve stress but we have to realize that exercise is a physical stress on the body. Lastly, watch your diet..don’t restrict your caloric intake and eat proper carbohydrates. Of course don’t over indulge in your pizza and cheeseburgers but healthy carbohydrates. . Final thoughts: allow enough time.
