A lot of people ask me, how do I train indoors with my bike and a turbo trainer? Well, this is how I train for my Ironman Bintan 70.3 in August this year.
1) I hop on my bike, which is pre-attached to my trainer.
2) I put on my Bluetooth headphone and load up my favorite playlist.
3) Then, I load a workout (per my training plan) on the Trainerroad app
4) Do my workout and sweat the hell out of it!
Today’s training was basically 4x12 minutes intervals at 95% to 99% of my FTP. The most important aspect of training (especially for events like Ironman) is to keep track your fitness and fatigue levels. For bike workouts, that would be your TSS, CTL, ATL & TSB. You can either use Training Peaks or Golden Cheetah, or even Trainerroad to track them.
With these metrics, you can safely ignore your bike (indoor/outdoor) workout’s average speed, distance, elevation gain etc. These “traditional” metrics don’t tell you anything about the exact work that you have done (due to so many variables), with respect to your fitness level.
I still struggle to keep my caloric intake to be exactly on par with my daily energy expenditures, but that topic is for another day.
