Happy Birthday to my dad, who turns 74 today. He's worn many hats over the years, from business man to lumberjack, from adventurer to spiritual counselor and from athlete to strong drink appreciator. He explored all this and kept us at his side. It's been this openness to life and to people that has been a gift to me. It's a gift, because it proves that it's never too late to become something the world doesn't expect. Even when that takes you places few others go, a dad can still step outside the box and secure the hearts of his children.
Happy Birthday dad. Thanks for all those hats (even the little one on my head here :) ).
Labels and Boxes
Labels and boxes
Colour inside the lines
How quickly we become
That which we despise.
Follow your (my) dreams
Do whatever you (I) want
The world is your oyster
But you better get taught.
Then all of a sudden
You are stamped and approved
Shipped off into the world
With something to prove.
But wait, hold on
Don’t go following your heart
We paid good money
To give you the best shot.
Four years of study
That you decided at eighteen,
We only want the best
Please don’t follow a pipe dream. “Yet a start in my field
Looks nothing like I thought.
Why the hell did I chose
To be something I’m not?” “I can’t take it, I’m leaving.
A caged animal’s how I feel.”
“Well you need to find work
To afford your next meal.” We’re told to grow up
And set our dreams aside
Pretty soon we only worry
About career suicide.
So we compromise ourselves
Because, well, “that’s life”;
And the fear of the unknown
Is scarier than a knife.
Then one day you’re alone
After your better half has left.
You phone up your parents,
“I don’t know who I am anymore,” you confess.
They’re sorry this happened
But aren’t sure what else to say,
“Now is the perfect time to find yourself,
So you can live how you want, everyday.” So kids listen up, I’m shifting the tone
To avoid a fifteen year set back.
Here’s my advice,
That might help you on your life’s track.
Don’t worry about boxes
And colour outside the lines,
Or you might turn into
What you don’t recognize.
Listen to your parents
BUT to what they argue about,
Cause those are THEIR fears
That will be projected on you, no doubt.
Don’t let their limiting beliefs
Become yours in this life,
The cycle must be broken
Or you’ll be riddled with strife.
The road less travelled
Is scary at best,
But it’s better than true terror:
Being middle aged, clinically depressed.
The one and only thing I’ve learned
What everyone should be taught:
That you must believe in yourself.
Do that, and you’ll rarely be distraught.

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.” - Robert Frost
This is from one of my favorite poems from high school...I will always remember it. It came to mind yesterday while the munchkin and I were taking a walk. You can definitely tell we took the less traveled path!
God doesn’t call us to a life of easy roads. We all have our ups and downs, but the rewards at the end are so worth it!
Keep pressing on today and have a wonderful Tuesday ☺️ #tuesdaythoughts#theroadlesstraveled#ranchlife#livingwaterfibersandalpacas#inspiration#winterwonderland#coloradolife
Growing up as an army BRAT has been a lifestyle that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. I was travelling before I even knew what it meant and I guess that's where my wanderlust comes from. Changing schools every 2 years (sometimes sooner!), going for bada khaana and unit picnics, playing every sport imaginable, that sweet smell of brasso, Saturday night jam sessions, I could go on and on but you get the gist; it is a different and special way of life. One thing that I definitely don't miss is when Senior's leave would end and he would return to the field. It used to suck not having him around for a lot of my school functions and annual days. But guess what? Life has a strange and funny way of coming full circle.
A few weeks back, I had the chance to go to Senior's 'school', the prestigious National Defence Academy, one last time before he retires. Imagine feeling like the parent here. The gleam in Senior's eyes as he took us on a tour and regaled us with tales from his days here was priceless. We went to his squadron, met the cadets and even saw his picture up on the wall (he looks a lot like me!). It was one of those days that I'll remember for a long, long time to come. The day I saw a glimpse of that young boy in him, an excited cadet eager to serve and protect his country for the next 40 years of his life. So honoured and proud to call that young cadet my role model today 🙌🏻
This Republic Day, a big salute to all the sung and unsung bravehearts who serve and protect us and a huge thanks to @thatordinarycouple for letting me participate in the #purplerepublicday campaign ❤️🇮🇳
Many are going through some hard situations, because their journey is about to begin. You're scared to lose friends and family because that's what the journey does.
It shakes those that's not suppose to be around you at the start of your journey. The Journey requires little, to no distractions around you, so that you can hear clearly. It's lonely going through your journey, because you will be tested and only 1 or 2 people with the knowledge of the process can assist you in a minimum way.
They can't hold your hand through this journey, because the journey doesn't need outside influence.
Good Luck On Your Journey!
“To be fully human is to be Wild. Wild is the strange pull and whispering wisdom. It’s the gentle nudge and the forceful ache. It is your truth, passed down from ancients, and the very stream of life in your blood. Wild is the soul where passion and creativity reside and the quickening of your heart. Wild is what is real and wild is your home.” -Victoria Erickson
When are you most connected to your wild? 💫
Wild is a state of being. I’m connected to my Wild when I’m exploring nature, hiking mountains and moving my body naturally. But for me, it’s also being in a creative flow. I love creating in the kitchen, especially traditional foods that our ancestors ate, it makes me feel connected + nourished.
Tell me, when you are most connected to your wild? How do you express creativity? ✨
Where is this year going to lead you to? A new place, a new adventure, a new little piece of self-discovery?
Perhaps an unexpected surprise awaits ahead?
For this first month of this 2018, lovely January has been so far pretty cozy in taking it easy within my little introvert cocoon. Taking some time to just ease into the year just redefining my routine. Such as cleaning out any things that no longer "spark joy" or even at the moment toying of the idea of going full vegetarian? Who knows we'll see...
All I do know is that I'm pretty giddy this is yet another year of changes and shifts but also to roads (or hikes!) I never thought I'd be on.
