When I was 18 I was searching for this record in every record store, but unfortunately enough I never found a copy (not even the alternate mix that was issued in the 1970's). After a year I stopped searching after it (which was only one year after I started) the EU reissue was released (2015), but I didn't bought. But last Saturday I finally came across one of these reissues.
Maybe it's an odd choice but 'Echoes' is becoming my favourite track on the album. That's possibly because of its poetic, floating atmosphere. It's so unlike any other Gene Clark song, no doubt it's influenced by Bob Dylan's 1964-1966 more abstract lyrics, but it's no Dylan ripp-off at all. I'm still looking for the key to its mystery. Those lyrics seem to go nowhere and everywhere, you don't even know if it's a story, a description of a movie scene, a daydream.
It's interesting how this album seems to be a bridge between folkrock, countryrock and what later would be called singer-songwriter.
The greatest band of all time. #TheByrds#ClarenceWhite#skipbattin#rogermcguinn#geneparsons#bbender Each one of these guys was the absolute best and a virtuoso musician with their own unique flair - all multi instrumentalists with perfect voices. Not only were they masters of their instruments, but any one could sing lead on a song, and all four of them together harmonized perfectly. Also, Clarence is the undisputed greatest guitar player to ever live.
You know what’s rich? When some dork on a 60s rock n roll forum calls Michael Clarke a “minor player”. Not only was he an original member of The Byrds (started out playing cardboard boxes), played on all Byrds records before Sweetheart of the Rodeo, played on Gene Clark’s solo record, Flying Burrito Brothers, came back for the Full Circle reunion record and played for Firefall. Here’s Clarke getting his bass drum painted by Von Dutch with Crosby and Hillman. Thanks @irishrichcustomcycles for digging up this pic. Yep...”Minor” my ass 😒#thebyrds #michaelclarke#8mileshigh
