*Movement, Education and Therapy* These are the 3 principles I'm constantly focusing on with clients. Of course every client is different and so the dosage of these 3 principles will depend on the client's needs and goals. Some people need more emphasis on the therapy side (physical therapy) while others need to better understand certain areas of the body better to help them achieve their goals (education). Pretty much across the board, every one will benefit from and need more movement in their lives. There is a difference between movement and exercise. Exercise is putting specific movements into a systematic routine to achieve a specific result. The human body is designed to move and so to be optimally healthy (if there is such a thing), it makes sense to live a physically active lifestyle and to move in a variety of fashions. A good example of this is the spine. Spinal problems are huge and whilst it is a complicated subject with no clear cut answer, one way your spine receives nutrition is via movement. So yes, moving your spine is a good start if you want a healthy spine. Research is suggesting that even your brain relies on movement to receive nutrition. Are the 3 principles above the cure to all ills? This was easily one of the most impressive strength days I’ve witnessed as a coach. Free agent running backs @its_kevsworld_2 and @reemo524 both hitting 2 reps on each leg with 405lbs on the bar! When I started using single leg exercises for max strength, I must admit I never thought I’d see a pair of running backs lunging for reps with over 400lbs. Very close to 2x bodyweight in a split position (they weigh 215lbs & 205lbs, respectively). If you think you can’t reach high loads with single leg work, give it a try and watch it develop. NOTE: it took these guys a solid year of using single leg training to reach this point. ( Pitchers lunge) It’s no secret that when training for power one must train multiple components that makes an adaptation. Wether your approach is isometrics before eccentrics or vice versa you still need to assist the bigger movement by breaking down the way the body’s able to generate movement. This lunge variation works great for many reasons. The landings creates a stiff leg at hip flexion where one would have to focus on keeping the knee inline with no valgus movement. The weights allows momentum to build up and create a loaded stimulus. Definitely something progressional but this can help with athletes who have to focus on decelerating fast. The final movement is the push off this is a great way to coach (push through the heels) if an athlete pushed though their toes they’re relying on their quads to make them come up. 🔹Depth Jumps🔹 🔑Depth jumps—in which an athlete jumps off a box 📦 , lands, then immediately jumps vertically ⏫, horizontally ⬅️➡️, or onto another box 📦—are one of the best tools for increasing vertical jump height and power 💥! 🔑The godfather 👴🏼 of plyometrics, Yuri Verkoshansky, developed "the shock method," in which the athlete drops down from a height and experiences a "shock" upon landing (i.e., myotatic reflex). This brings about a forced lengthening of the muscle 💪🏼, which then immediately causes a shortening of the muscle as the athlete jumps up. This slightly increases the load (via gravity) to produce the "shock." As the athlete lands, in order to perform the jump, he or she must generate more force and at a faster rate. This is what leads to the increase in vertical jump height. 🔑Because depth jumps are a power movement, the volume must remain low in order to prevent fatigue 😴. Fewer than ten reps is a good standard as the jumps are taxing on the nervous ⚡️ system. 1️⃣Start on a stable elevated platform. 2️⃣Gently step off the platform, landing your toes onto the floor and immediately jumping back up as high ⬆️ as you can. Minimize the time spent on the ground!
