Game Report #13 – Borussia Dortmund vs. Schalke 04
Derby-time in Germany. Ruthless. Unpredictable. Crazy. This is why we love football.
The “Revierderby”, one of the most exciting football derbies in Germany or even the world. Over the years, games between “Ruhr”-rivals Dortmund and Schalke have seen several unbelievable matches. Derbies like that are always unpredictable and irrational, and they show that everything is possible in football, that you should never leave the stadium or turn off the TV too early. The latest one last Saturday showed that particularly well.
The signs were clear ahead of this game: After a great season start under new coach Peter Bosz, Borussia Dortmund slowly fell into a deep hole of worry. They welcomed their rivals at the Signal Iduna Park after taking just one point and conceding 14 times in their last five Bundesliga matches – a league low. On the other side, Schalke currently plays their best football since years. On matchday seven, Dortmund was nine points ahead of S04, but they now find themselves three behind. Let´s see how this game proceeded.
Six changes and a different formation seemed to help Borussia Dortmund, as they started off the game really well, surprisingly for the majority of the 80.179 spectators in the Signal Iduna Park, as the game at 3pm was the first “Revierderby” for years, where Schalke was considered the favourite. “Die Borussen” started the spectacle in the 12th minute, as Nuri Sahin extended a cross from youngster Christian Pulisic to Aubameyang, who slid in the direction of the ball, netted it in and celebrated with a cheeky front flip. Important information: Auba used his hand to put the ball over the line, but neither an intention nor a clear movement of the hand could be seen and the ball would have gone into the goal anyway, so it was the right decision to let the goal count. 6 minutes later the BVB doubled its lead but had Schalke to credit for this one. A deep cross from Sahin was turned past keeper Ralf Fährmann by Benjamin Stambouli who was stretching to prevent Aubameyang from getting a shot away.
