Guanyin means "Perceiving the Sounds (or Cries) of the World.” 🌍 ⠀⠀ She is the goddess of mercy/compassion and faces the sea to protect fisherman during storms. When we see old people moving slowly, with bad posture and generally not functioning well, we think ‘that’s what happens when we age’. This is true to an extent, but it’s not the number of years that ultimately causes our wear and tear, it is how we treat ourselves whilst we are able. Working an office job? For many people there isn’t much escaping sitting for long periods of the day. There are some alternatives such as using standing desks, but let’s be honest, who does that all day? What we can do however, is take steps to ensure our actions now do not have long standing consequences on our body’s health and that we keep functioning properly for as long as we can! We were designed to move all day long, not sit all day long. Simple tools such as stretch bands, massage balls and quality lumbar support can seriously reduce the chances of chronic pain and other functional diseases later on down the line. Any physical problems occurring within our bodies USUALLY impact from that point upwards. For example shoulder problems will likely affect our neck and heads. Back problems will have an impact on our whole upper body and problems in our feet can interrupt proper function of pretty much everything often putting things out of alignment. A MAJOR and COMMON problem is APT (anterior pelvic tilt). As the picture shows, the pelvis is at the wrong angle (ribs and bum pushed out). A BIG cause of this is too much time spent sitting down. Our backs become tired and we find ways of coping - this is the result. Luckily, there are many ways to fix APT through stretching, strengthening the core and glutes and using quality lumbar support if you are forced to sit much of the day. I sometimes bring up the centaur - the mythical half-man half-horse creature - when explaining to certain clients why I believe they are in pain. . With this mythical being, you can see that the lower horse half provides a strong and stable platform for the upper human half, and crucially, it's the lower half which drives the creature forward during movement. . A similar thing should happen with your body. Your hips and pelvis should provide a balanced, aligned and strong platform for your upper body, and they should drive you forward when you walk, jump and run. Now don't get me wrong, your upper body has a crucial role in walking, running and stabilisation, but it should not be the driver. The driver should be your hips! . Unfortunately with many people I see, because their hips and pelvis are unbalanced, misaligned and weak, their upper body is forced to compensate and help out with work not being done efficiently from below. In some movements the driver is now the upper body, instead of the hips. . So what can happen when we get this role reversal? Well, over weeks, months and years the lower back is exposed to excess work, strain, and wear and tear, until perhaps you bend down to pick up a pen, or lift something, and you strain a muscle or blow out a disc, and/or your back spasms to try and protect you from further damage. Perhaps your neck musculature becomes chronically overworked, tight and eventually painful. Perhaps the muscles below the back of your head get tight leading to headaches. Perhaps your upper back tightens and rounds forward, which then causes your shoulders to round forward, which then causes your right elbow to overwork when you play an instrument or a sport, eventually leading to elbow pain. . How do you fix this? You need a daily set of corrective exercises to balance, align and strengthen your hips and pelvis, so they can do their job properly, which then allows your upper body to do its job properly. It may seem strange to do exercises for your hips when you have elbow pain, but I think in many cases it would be strange not to! Remember the site of your pain is rarely the source of your pain. . #belikeacentaur

The amount of time we sit down for during the day is becoming increasingly longer. This leads to us sliding down our chairs ending up slouched and slumped. After endless days of this position we start becoming tight in our hip flexors, chest, shoulders and neck causing the onset of back and neck pain, headaches, sometimes pins and needles down our arms, eye strain and general discomfort.
